Then and now: Tina Arena reflects on 40 years in the music industry

Growing up as a young girl in suburban Melbourne, Tina Arena, 48, always knew she was set for a successful career in music.

"I wasn’t sure of the destination, I just knew that I was going to have a very interesting time,” she told media after she was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame on Thursday night.

Starting out as 'Tiny Tina' on Young Talent Time, the pop queen went on to become Australian music royalty, carving a stellar career as one of the country's most successful singers.

After receiving her ARIA award, a humble Arena took time to reflect on her remarkable 40-years in the music industry.

“I asked my mum, ‘what was I like [as a child]?’"

“She said, ‘you were a pain in the arse,’” the singer joked, before adding: “[Mum] said, you just knew what you wanted'".

“I was just one of those kids, I wasn’t demanding. I was happy. I ate, I slept. But my music was my life.”

"That was the way I expressed myself, that's where I found solace, peace, friends. I learnt so many things through that art [music]"

During the award ceremony the 48-year-old songstress gave a powerful speech, praising her fellow female artists who are "over 40" and "still in the game," which quickly became a hit on social media.

"Ladies over 40 are still in the game. "Keep doing what you’re doing, ladies, because we will decide when it is time for us to stop," she told the cheering crowd.

As a fitting tribute, fellow Australian pop superstar and friend, Kylie Minogue, ushered Arena in to the Hall of Fame.

"Kylie and I have known each other since we were kids so it makes complete sense that she would be inducting me," Arena said.
