In 1923, Pola Negri, who was born in Poland, made her first U.S. movie, "Bella Donna." Between 1923 and 1928, Negri made 20 films for Paramount. Only one, "Forbidden Paradise," was directed by her mentor Ernst Lubitsch.

Negri had high-profile romances with some of the biggest stars of her day, including an engagement to Charlie Chaplin and a love affair with Rudolph Valentino. At Valentino's funeral on Sept. 8, 1926, The Times reported that Negri "went to the casket moaning in grief and at times sobbing loudly. She lifted the old rose pall and her flowers upon it and kissed the coffin fervidly and many times. She collapsed. Friends lifted her to a divan, where she recovered shortly."
