A heritage stone fruit that is fantastic turned into a range of scrumptious treats, desserts and jams. The can also be an addition to roast joints and other savoury cooking.  Currently Available in weights of 1.25kg, 2kg, 3kg, 4kg, 5kg, 6kg, 7kg, 8kg and 9kg.

If unfamiliar with Damsons they are a fruit mostly used for cooking as they are more tart than other stone fruits.

Looking after your fruit: We keep the Damsons chilled just hours after being picked to lock in the freshness. We also pick early avoid splitting and weather damage. With this in mind, if your Damsons arrive firm then allow to ripen further at room temperature. Once ripe or if they arrive ripe keep refrigerated in salad draw until you are ready to enjoy. Remember damsons are usually pretty firm and tart.

We have various wild damson trees on the farm so we top up our own grown damsons with our friends, these are very carefully sourced and also grown in Kent.

Our fresh fruit one day delivery service currently operates in mainland UK rom Monday to Friday*. All of our apricots come packaged in card boxes with protection to ensure quality from field to table. The damsons are loose in the box.

Please add a note to your order if you are planning in advance and want your fruit by a specific day and we will try to meet this.

*Fresh Fruit Delivery – We currently use APC Overnight Delivery or DPD Next Day. These services operate Monday to Friday in England and Wales and do not deliver on Saturday or Sunday. For customers in Scotland most of the time it is the same service as England and Wales, this is true for Glasgow and Edinburgh but remote areas may take 2 days, Islands and Highlands may have a supplementary charge, we may contact you after your order if this is required or please email for Scottish rates. We allow 1 day processing time and an additional day for delivery. The fruit is only in transit for 1 day from us to you. Example: Order Wednesday for Delivery on Friday. While every possible effort will be made to fulfil this service we cannot be held responsible for problems caused by the courier company. Orders placed on Friday and over the weekend will be processed for a Tuesday dispatch at the latest. Eg. Thursday, Friday, Weekend orders could arrive Tuesday or Wednesday. Orders after 4pm may be moved into the following day. DPD and APC both provide tracking. During preorders we dispatch on harvest in order of received. Our fresh Green/ Golden Cobnuts are widely renowned for their full flavour, they are perfect in dishes or simply on their own. Cobnuts have a nationally recognised nutritional profile and are said to be fantastic sources of protein:

Cobnut kernels typically contain 12%-17% protein by dry weight, and about 10%-15% fibre. Cobnuts are very rich in vitamin E and in calcium, typically containing about 21mg and 141mg per 100g kernel (dry weight) respectively. They provide about 0.4mg and 0.55mg of vitamins B1 and B6 respectively per 100g dry weight.

Our Cobnuts are available in weights ranging from 500g to 50kg and are harvested between August and October.

Multi Orders: We now offer improved delivery rates but please note if you order or preorder different varieties of cobnut (Kent, Gunslebert, Ennis, Butler) or multiple items we will dispatch them together when all are available as we no longer charge delivery fees per item. Dehusked Gunslebert Cobnuts – 2023 Season – Now Dispatching

Our Dehusked Gunslebert Cobnuts are now available. The Gunslebert  is a variety of hazelnut that has a unique and enjoyable flavour. As a nut the Gunslebert is more rounded than the Kent Cob and when green has a frilly husk. As a nut they can be eaten fresh or used in dishes.

Dehusked cobnuts should be kept cool to prevent the kernel (nut) drying. A salad draw is an ideal place for storage.

Potted Gunslebert Cobnut Trees – Out of Stock

We now have a number of  Gunslebert Cobnut trees available in 7 Litre pots – We are out of 3 litre Gunslebert Cobnut trees. These trees are on British grown roots and are suitable for planting most places in the UK.

These are ideal for planting and producing high yielding trees. Many garden centers currently sell seedling trees and these usually yield very few cobnuts. These trees are the same trees that we grow on the farm and if properly maintained should produce a good crop of Kent Cobnuts.

Cobnuts are packed full of vitamins, minerals and fibre. In winter the catkins on the trees brighten up the trees.

Two varieties are deemed preferable for pollination but not essential as common hedge row nut can assist with pollination.

The trees do vary in size and shape but are generally between 30cm and a meter. We cannot guarantee the size of the trees selected for delivery but every care is taken to select a good tree.

 

On Arrival:

We advise watering the pot and planting promptly into the ground or into a large pot for later planting if required. The pot should have room to allow further root growth. The tree will need a healthy watering over the first few days.

If planting dig a hole twice the size of the pot and tease out the roots.Make sue that the root ball is level and not at an angle. Water regularly and monitor.

The aim after this point will be to manage the growth of branches. These should be allowed to form at least 60cm from the ground.

Kent Cobnut Trees – Due to staff holiday these will not be dispatched until W/C 15th April 2024

They are available to collect by appointment or delivery. They are bare root and will be without a pot. These trees have been propagated on our own heritage Kent Cobnut trees some of which are 100 years old. This was featured on Marcus Wareing’s tales from the Kitchen garden. These are whips / clones from the heritage mother trees and so should be ideal for producing the Kent Cob variety.

Many garden centres currently sell seedling trees and these usually yield very few cobnuts. These trees are the same trees that we grow on the farm and if properly maintained should produce a good crop of Kent Cobnuts.

Do avoid planting if the ground is totally saturated and wait until drier, perhaps store in a pot during this time. You may need to purchase or make a tree guard ifor protection in the first 4 years.

The aim after this point will be to manage the growth of branches. These should be allowed to form at least 60cm from the ground. As we are now offering 2ft-3ft (61cm-91cm) whips we have begun this for you.

Red Squirrel Cobnut Mix / Squirrel Feed –  Update 07.02.24 – Dispatching 2023 Husked and Dehusked

We recommend dehusked as husked are less attractive this time of year although the squirrels do not mind. Husked may need airing on arrival as they are kept cold for larger kernels but this means the husk can be damp. 

Roughway Farm has supplied cobnuts for Red Squirrel conservation projects across the UK for over 50 years. From Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands our cobs have been enjoyed by our native squirrels.

Our red squirrel cobnuts are mixed cobnut varieties that are suited for squirrel consumption. Our squirrel nuts vary in terms of size and appearance. Our squirrel nuts are all grown in Kent and are certainly enjoyed by the squirrels!

We currently sell a range of weights from smaller packets for home use in gardens to larger bulk quantities in 20kg boxes. Please note we now place all sack orders in boxes due to a request from our courier. If you want a larger order please email and we are happy to organise.

Our Squirrel Cobnuts are harvested between September and October each year.

Please keep in mind that our cobs are kept cool to keep the kernels in good condition. This means that husked nuts in particular can be a little damp late season (Late Nov- March) and so should be allowed to air on arrival. The dehusked nuts by December and into the new year are generally drier and are preferred by some customers for handling and appearance. The squirrels however are happy with both.
