About the artworkWhat value does emptiness have? "Void no value" - that's what it says in the empty box on air tickets. Emptiness doesn't count. Emptiness is free. So emptiness can be read as a symbol of freedom. Yves Klein knew that. One summer day in 1946 he was lying on the beach at Nice, looking up at the endless blue sky. And he felt how he was being sucked up into this dizzy height - out into emptiness. But a couple of birds spoilt the vision. All of a sudden the dizzy emptiness was nothing but a flat background. That was how Yves Klein discovered his sign for an emptiness beyond the measurable. The dizzy blue. He took out a patent on a shade of ultramarine with a special lustre - IKB, International Klein Blue - and painted the emptiness. He became Yves le Monochrome, the painter of air and space. Monochrome canvases were his hallmark. A few red ones, a few green, a few in goldleaf. But mostly blue - I-K-B.
