Alfred Naquet, né à Carpentras le 6 octobre 1834 et mort à Paris le 10 novembre 1916, est un médecin, chimiste et homme politique français, promoteur du divorce judiciaire et farouche partisan de la séparation de l'Église et de l'État. La Farce de la Marmite, pièce traduite par Tailhade, fut représentée pour la première fois sur le Théâtre National de l'Odéon, le 27 janvier 1907. Bon état intérieur, édition originale.

Le tome I (seul de 4) de la première édition de la première traduction en français des comédies de Plaute du célèbre auteur, traducteur et homme de lettres Michel de Marolles (1600 - 1681), avec le texte en latin et français sur pages opposantes. Le frontispice présente la gravure d'une scène de l'Amphitryon et d'une vue extérieure d'un théatre classique, crée par le peintre, dessinateur et graveur François Chauveau (1613 - 1676), qui obtient en 1662 le titre de graveur du roi Louis XIV. Molière se baserat quelques années plus tard sur le texte traduit par l'abbé de Marolles pour son Amphitryon et l'Avare.M. de Marolles utilisait pour son édition les corrections laissées par feu François Guiet. Après l'epitre au roi et la préface suit une biographie de Plaute, une chronologie touchant le temps de la mort de Plaute avec table chronologique d'Adame et Eve jusqu'en 159 av. J. C., une bibliographie des éditions de Plaute et de la littérature ancienne et moderne sur les Comédies. Ensuite la table des matières des 4 tomes. Comprit dans le premier tome: l'Amphitryon, l'Asinaire, l'Aululaire ou l'Avaricieux, les Captifs et le Curculion.
