C est pour cette raison que les études mythologiques ne sauraient exclure le rôle et la signification de ces êtres, accompagnateurs de l homme. Des créatures aussi bien mythiques qu ordinaires apparaissent dans la littérature médiévale arthurienne. Les chevaliers combattent dragons et sangliers sauvages ; les chiens révèlent la véritable identité de leurs maîtres ; et les chevaliers ne sont rien sans leurs montures. Les animaux jouent aussi un rôle prophétique, prédisant les victoires d Arthur et éclairant les événements récents. Dans la légende arthurienne, la magie et le merveilleux sont toujours très liés à la Nature. Les animaux appartiennent à cet univers sauvage qui échappe à la raison des hommes et qui est encore dirigé par des forces mystérieuses. À ce titre, eux aussi possèdent une forme de magie, eux aussi peuvent être un lien entre le monde des hommes et le monde féerique. Le colloque a permis d explorer toute la richesse du bestiaire arthurien. Non sans émotion, un hommage a été rendu à Robert Baudry, disparu quelques jours après nous avoir transmis son texte, « L énigme des métamorphoses ». Les intervenants ont décliné diverses facettes du monde animal. Eric Meillan évoque la figure complexe et controversée du sanglier, d abord boréen et spirituel, puis diabolique avec l apport du christianisme. Daniel Bordeaux nous propose une lecture alchimique et polysémique du lion et du dragon dans Yvain ou le chevalier au lion. Georges Bertin relate la légende d Uther Pendragon et la prophétie liée à la tour du roi Vortigern. Il examine l occurrence du dragon en double figure dans les imaginaires à l uvre à l époque de la composition de ces récits. Mathilde Dalbion se penche ensuite sur un sujet peu commenté, « Les animaux guérisseurs, connaisseurs des herbes médicinales ou fruits magiques qui peuvent apporter divers bienfaits à leurs congénères et aux hommes. Sophie Coussemacker étudie l évolution de cinq types de cavalières. Si elles jouissent d une grande autonomie sur les chemins fictionnels du royaume de Logres, leur liberté d action s amenuise progressivement et disparaît peu à peu dans les remaniements en prose. Si le personnage d Enide est évidemment le plus emblématique, d autres, à l instar de la Demoiselle Hideuse du Conte du Graal sont liées de façon intrinsèque à leur monture. Sylvain Ferrieu esquisse une comparaison entre deux animaux emblématiques de la littérature arthurienne, le loup et le lion, placés néanmoins aux antipodes de la littérature chevaleresque, à mesure que s affirment les valeurs du christianisme et l émergence de la science. Enfin, Lauric Guillaud évoque quelques figures animales et anthropomorphes. Les métamorphoses successives finissent par faire s accorder des portions d êtres fabuleux qu on trouvera dans les récits arthuriens : licornes, phénix, griffons et dragons, notamment la « bête glatissante », objet de quêtes de chevaliers fameux comme Pellinore, Palamède, et Perceval. Le colloque se termine par une passionnante présentation de blasons animaliers de Gérard Byron Clouzard.
