First Edition
Half leather. First edition. This is the first edition, first printing of the first volume appearance of Winston S. Churchill's engaging speculative history essay "If Lee Had Not Won the Battle of Gettysburg". Churchill's intriguing piece first appeared in Scribner's Magazine in December 1930 as part of a series of "What If" articles by eminent authors of the time. In 1931, Longmans published this book-length work on the same theme, including Churchill's piece at pp. 173-196. We commissioned this magnificent binding in half red Morocco goatskin over marbled paper-covered boards. The hubbed spine features gilt tooling on and framing the raised spine bands, as well as twin dark brown spine labels. The covers feature gilt rule transitions between the Morocco spine and corners and the marbled-paper sides. The contents are bound with matching marbled endpapers, silk head and foot bands, and gilt top edge. The newly commissioned binding is flawless. The contents are crisp and clean with no previous ownership marks. The only appreciable soiling is a small stain to the upper fore edges (that does not intrude on the contents within), as well as an incidental hint of spotting confined to the fore edges. This British first edition preceded an American counterpart and, oddly, we find it scarcer even than copies of the original magazine publication. Churchill's essay herein displays the commanding grasp of history and the facility for extrapolation that made him so formidable as both a statesman and a writer. Moreover, his interest in America's great struggle was quite serious; Churchill toured Virginia battlefields with the great Civil War historian Douglas Southall Freeman and toured Gettysburg with none other than Dwight Eisenhower. Thirty years later, Churchill would publish a book on the subject, The American Civil War (1961), excerpted from his epic A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. He conveys with tremendous power the majesty and desolation of history, the vanity of pomp and pride, the transitoriness of fame. And he is the poet of contemporary society, keen to discern the false and the corrupt, courageous in denunciation yet with pity for the young and innocentâ ¦ As a poet he mirrored brilliantly and without distortion an absorbingly interesting world" (Baugh, 1229).

Grasset). Minimes frottements à l'étui. Excellent exemplaire sur un rare Japon.

Fine Binding. Condition: Fine. None (illustrator). First edition. A very smartly bound first edition set of Andre Maurois' biography of Byron. From the library at Julians Park, once home to socialite and patron of arts Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. This work is numbered 516 of copies printed on Velin pur Chiffon. In the original French.Rebound in beautiful half morocco bindings. Complete in two volumes. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (Audrey Evelyn James Coats, and Audrey Evelyn James Field) at Julian"s Park. Pleydell-Bouverie was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire. Audrey was also alleged to be the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, although she was also rumoured to be his daugher, or the lover of King Edward VIII. She bought Julians Park in 1940 following her third marriage to the Hon Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was a patron of the arts and it is believed that she bound several books herself, as many books from her library were stamped with her name and she owned a group of bookbinding tools. Her circle of friends included Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel and Nancy Mitford. She was featured in Cecil Beaton's 'Book of Beauty' and was regarded as one of the Bright Young Things. In uniform half morocco bindings, with paper covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. A few light spots to the preliminary leaves.
