Limited large paper edition (hardback). 4to (27cm by 22cm), xix, 290pp. Portrait frontispiece, 50 colour plates from pictures by George Morland, each protected by a tissue. Original decorated white cloth, gilt titling to the front board and the spine, top edge gilt. Light rubbing of the binding, endpapers browned and chipped. Overall, this copy is in good to very good condition. This edition is limited to 250 copies (this is copy number 159) signed by the author.

D. Cuming.Collated, complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with some discolouration, as is usual with white cloth. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light marks to the boards and spine, heavier to the rear board. Minor rubbing to the front board. Front hinge is a little strained. Tape marks to the front and rear endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot and handling mark. A fascinating and comprehensive biography of eighteenth-century English artist George Morland. Heavily influenced by Francis Wheatley, Morland's paintings feature rustic scenes, farms, and hunting.Written by Sir Walter Gilbey and E.D. Cuming.The first edition of this work.Number one out of two-hundred-and-fifty from a limited edition publication, signed by Gilbey to the limitations page.Containing fifty charming illustrated plates in full colour, collated and complete.Previously housed at the Stockport Public Library, with library stamps to the odd page (see condition report for more detail). Handsomely rebound in quarter cloth with the original cloth binding laid down tot the boards. Externally, smart, with some fading, shelf wear, and some marks to the cloth on the boards. Library stamps to the half title page, frontispiece, title page, verso of the title page, page v, vii, ix, and to each plate.Internally, plate opposite page 72 is detached but present, otherwise volume is firmly bound. There are 56 tissue-guarded plates, 10 in colour. 9 of these colour plates are also reproduced in B&W making an actual total of 65 plates. Etat : used. This charming watercolour scene is after George Moorland's original oil painting depicting a woman trying to sell fish to a man on horseback. A small terrier dog looks at the array of fish that spill from the woman's baskets as she reaches up to accept payment from the gentleman. Signed and dated to the lower right. Biographer's Copy. This copy belonged to a subsequent Morland biographer, RALPH RICHARDSON, and is signed by him on the verso of the flyleaf, with the date "1890". Richardson was the author of GEORGE MORLAND, PAINTER, LONDON (1763-1804), and the extra engravings inserted in the rear are doubtless from his own collection. Several clippings affixed to rear endpapers, with Richardson's notes, and one autograph transcription by Richardson from The Farrington Diary, regarding Dawe. Nice association copy. Full later dark brown calf, gilt-rolled border, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Spine label missing Engraved frontispiece portrait by Charles Picart after portrait by J.R.
