The Tiananmen, Tian'anmen or Gate of Heavenly Peace was first built during the Ming Dynasty in 1420. The gate was originally named Chengtianmen, or 'Gate of Accepting Heavenly Mandate', and it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. it was from the rostrum of the Gate of Heavenly Peace that Chairman Mao announced the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
