Another great book from Sequart!

I love Grant Morrison, but sometimes his books leave me scratching my head. Those who have read his works like The Filth or the Invisibles probably know this feeling, but they also know how enjoyable it is to sit down and try to decipher what he means when he says "You were buying cat food."

Curing the Postmodern Blues by Tom Shapira is a great look at the themes of The Filth without being a heavy handed, page-by-page breakdown. While you can find books on other Morrison titles that annotate each panel, giving great insight, Shapira gives you the tools to understand what Morrison means overall, and then lets you loose to discover the individual components of that greater message on your own.

After reading the Filth for the first time, then sitting down with this book, I am excited to immediately read the Filth again and see if I can't crack some of the codes I couldn't make it through the first time.

Another "impenetrable" Morrison comic. (Well, unless you have the time to read it ten times!) This book was a real eye-opener for me. It's not issue-by-issue like the other Sequart Morrison books. Rather, it's more theme-by-theme, which is a different yet still appealing way to "companion" THE FILTH.

And the interviews with all three main creators on THE FILTH are priceless. Not to mention the 30+ images that Weston donated to the book. One of the images is actually an uncensored version that DC later touched up. I assume it's never been seen before being published in this book.

All around, it's a must have for Morrison fans.

I though i'd reviewed this at the time but didn't but do now as this is a superb piece of work.

Just as difficult as the Filth is to understand this book is a superb companion in making sense of it all. It not only deals with the series itself but alludes and enlightens the whole concept of post modernism. Its actually very educational and very well written : neither 'dumbed down' nor academic for academic sake.

Even people who have never read the source materail could get something out of this.

Overall a great read and higly recommended........ a definate buy if your a Morrison fan, own the Filth or even neither.......

If you like The Filth, I highly recommend this book. As an ambiguous series it demanded insightful literary criticism. I admit, along with many others, that The Filth went completely over my head; but I knew deep down that there was a huge wealth of metaphor and intention intricately hidden behind the grime and degradation.

Also, if you're a fan of Black Comedy and Blue Jam in particular, I'd recommend both Grant Morrison's The Filth and this companion. For someone with a mordant sense of humour - such as myself - this is simply an indispensable form of medication.
