I bought these Thrawn books after complaining about Star Wars/Disney. Books are nice in that they let you adapt the story and characters to a degree within your own imagination. Instead of being forced (zing) to imagine Leia as an elderly diaper wearing Marry Poppins, I can instead imagine her literally any other way than in the sequel trilogy. Good times were had by all.

This series is the direct reason Star Wars is still alive. When these books came out, there was NOTHING new or in the works. IMO, because of the level of skill in writing, Zahn woke up a sleeping fan base. As of now (2021) it is not cannon, but if you read it, you may long for a “Thrawn trilogy” as I have for thirty years now…

I am currently reading the second book. I have known about these books for years. I always wondered what they were like. With the massive disappointment over the recent sequels, I was looking for something that would displace the Disney Disasters. I bought the Timothy Zahn books with that hope. They continue the story post Empire and certainly are very workman like. There lacks the epic feel despite traveling from one world to another. I do not think that it has a depth to plunge you into the Star Wars universe. There is not the detail to produce the images in your mind of massive space battles, the wonders of alien worlds or a galactic threat.
One major problem, I believe, that is missing in the Star Wars universe is a enemy that can match Darth Vader. He is the one character whose presence charged the original movies. I don't think any other antagonist will ever come up to his status.
I will say about these books, they have inspired me to write my own fan fiction stories.
