Product Description

Through the history of mankind, the times that are most recorded in mythology and song are those of great deeds and fantastic adventures. Such a time was the Hyborean Age. Such a tale is the story of "Conan The Barbarian". Cimmerian Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is captured as a child after his parents' savage murder by raiding Vanir led by Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones), head also of the malignant snake-cult of Set. Fifteen yeas' agony, first chained to the Wheel of Pain grinding grain and then enslaved as a Pit Fighter, forge a magnificent body and indomitable spirit. Freed miraculously one day by his owner, Conan, with his companions Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez) and Valeria, Queen of Thieves (Sandahl Bergman), sets forth upon his quest to learn "the riddle of steel" which, his father has prophesied, will confer ultimate power; and to kill the arch-villain Thulsa Doom.

Conan the Barbarian, the movie that turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a global superstar, is a prime example of a match made in heaven. It's the movie that macho maverick writer-director John Milius was born to make, and Arnold was genetically engineered for his role as the muscle-bound, angst-ridden hero created in Robert E. Howard's pulp novels. Oliver Stone contributed to Milius's screenplay, and the production design by comic artist Ron Cobb represents a perfect cinematic realization of Howard's fantasy world. To avenge the murder of his parents, Conan tracks down the evil Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) with the help of Queen Valeria (played by buff B-movie vixen Sandahl Bergman) and Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez). Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as "the perfect fantasy for the alienated pre-adolescent," this blockbuster is just as enjoyable for adults who haven't lost their youthful imagination. --Jeff Shannon

Try to get the better original version!
This is the greatest "swords and sorcery" film ever made -- except the "Collector's Edition" contains added material which degrades the far better original release that was shown in theaters in 1982. Try to get the 1981 original, widescreen DVD that was issued as ISBN 0-7832-2576-8 in 1998. The studio well knew what it was doing when making the original theatrical cut. 5 Stars for that one!

What Robert Howard, John Milius, Oliver Stone, et. al did with this movie is not show you the definition of a War Master in Conan in his physicality and how well-trained he was. They also delved in the true psychological toll of combat with the loss of his parents and Valaria and himself being beaten and defeated and being left to die he had to go through all of that to eventually defeat Thulsa Doom. No disrespect to any other war movies because there are great ones out there but very few tell the true psychology of combat when everything in your mind says quit but you still go on anyway it's not about the blood and guts it about when physically and mentally you have given your all and still have a job to do what do you do then that's what it takes to be a real Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Guardian, or Airman

Overall I am very satisfied with this set, as it not only provides three different cuts of a great film (Theatrical, International and Extended), but also loads of extras to fulfill all your Conan (1982) needs. The packaging is also very professionally delivered, with a poster, making of book and insert cards with scenes from the movie on each. If I was going to note any dissatisfier with this set, it is that the latter cards having pictures that should have been more polished yet they appear blurry and dark. But with everything else positive included with this set, I focused more on the super-positive.

It is the full meal deal when it comes to this classic. The visuals are outstanding, just as when it was on the big screen for detail and clarity!

Ah, Conan the Barbarian. If you were lucky enough to be alive in the eighties and of an age old enough to go to the movies you may have been lucky enough to see Arnold at the beginning of his movie career and eventual box office dominance of the eighties and early nineties. Let's start with some background. Conan the Barbarian was released in May of 1982 with an estimated budget of 20 million dollars. The director was John Milius with Universal Pictures distributing it and Dino De Laurentiis Company producing. The movie is an adaptation of a character created by Robert E. Howard named Conan back in the 1930's in the days of pulp fiction magazines. These were stories that were published in large number on cheaper grade paper pulp magazines which later became known collectively as pulp fiction. Howard has since become regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery genre. His career as a writer was short lived though as he shot himself in the head at the age of thirty. The movie opens with a black background on which is a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." It pretty much follows Conan through the trials and tribulations of going from a little boy through adulthood. The whole movie came about from Ed Pressman a producer who had been looking for a new vehicle for Arnold after his movie Pumping Iron where in which the world got a look into the world of bodybuilding and Arnold's training for the 1975 Mr. Olympia contest. He had a friend Ed Summer also a producer (isn't everybody...) who owned a comic book store and said Conan would be a perfect vehicle and took Pressman over to see the Conan comic books he had, this would've been around 1977. Just so happens Oliver Stone had been working on a script for a Conan movie at the time as he was also a fan of Robert Howard's Conan writings. Stone pitched the idea to Dino De Laurentiis who bought his script and brought in John Milius as the director. Milius took a liking to the Conan character cause he had been into Vikings from early on in his youthful surfboarding days. Milius would bring his surfing friend Gerry Lopez in as Subotai and eventually Sandahl Bergman as Valeria. Ron Cobb designed the look of the sets (he also worked on the sets of Alien) and Basil Poledouris (another friend of Milius) would do the sound track. The thing I like about this movie is that Arnold was still relatively new to acting so he wasn't throwing out the one liners and cracking jokes every other line like he did in Conan the Destroyer. This is definitely the movie that launched his career though and he basically owned the eighties from there on out. For extra features you have: A Deleted Scenes section. Conan unchained: The Making of Conan an excellent video with Ed Pressman on how it all started. Art of Steel: Sword Makers and Masters, this section goes to New Glarus, Wisconsin where the Albion Armorers Company make true reproductions of Conan's father's sword and the Atlantian sword (Jody Samson originally created the Conan swords and worked for Albion) and also has an appearance from Sensei Yamazaki the sword master who trained Arnold and the rest of the cast on the set. Conan: From the Vault, a collection of commentary and videos from back in the day and on the set of the movie. Special Effects, a short minute and a half video of one of the effects shots from the movie. Conan Archives, a collection of animation drawings and stills from the set. A theatrical trailer section and to round out the extra features: Feature Commentary with Director John Milius and Arnold Schwarzenegger. If you're a fan of the Jason Momoa version of Conan then you probably won't like Arnold's Conan but just like Shawn Connery was the first Bond, Arnold was, is and always will be CONAN in many peoples hearts.

HI . I purchased Blu-ray because I knew the quality of the film would be much more clear . What I did not know is the music had been completely changed. Conan the Barbarian does not go well with an orchestra type of music , replacing the orginal music. Completlely changed the tone of the entire movie. Im not sure if scenes were missing as I fell asleep. I also missed the gritty voice that from the background kept us appraised of the inner thoughts of Conan. Also Mr. Schwarzenegger has changed a lot in the past 30 or so years which is to be expected and happens to us all. That does not matter. I live in California so see more of him than most would who live in other states , unless of course they are Arnold Schwarzenegger fans. He has made some other movies I also like such as the
"Terminator" and "Terminator 2" Both are great "B" movies which Im a fan of "B" .. . So I purchased a DVD copy of the original movie shown exactly like it was made . The music the same and the wonderful gritty voice which was our "guide" though out the movie silent scenes bode well with the movie as it gave one a view of life 3000 to 4000 BC. Dark quiet at night unless pre arraigned fights like Conan was forced into, these events were by word of mouth as few could read, Or unless one found an inn to find a bed to sleep in for the night and perchance someone the "share" it with. in a smelly bed bug ridden place where there was perhaps music, making new friends by the light of a torch. fire, a bite to eat as well. Otherwise the nights were quiet. little food very quiet at night unless one .Sex ,food and music most of the night. In a sence little has changed.. To this day the young go out and try and meet the other lonely men and women. In the DVD unchanged version the music was the same which I liked a lot and added a lot to the entire movie. So I recommend the DVD version NOT the Blu-ray version with its extreme conflict with the music and the times it was suppose to represent. A former middle eastern dancer , Im very familiar with the types of music used then and now and still little has changed. So though the Blu-Ray version was more clear the music ruined it. Im sorry I bought it in the first place. A waste of money. Oh , the Wizard lived by the ocean but also near the desert, I think this area would have been in the Morocco area with its surrounding high mountain range where Conan was born , with snow and all that goes with higher elevations to this day in or around the Moroccan landscape. Horses where well cared for as they were costly , the camel was the desert ship not the horse which could not go as long without water. But a fast horse could save ones life. So a well bred horse was a prize. Well I have more to say but I would put you to sleep. Hope you do take the time to read this. Aloha.

I'm not a technical expert. I can't comment on the technical quality of the transfer. All I can say is that I am very happy that they put out this magnificent movie in 4K. The quality, in my unqualified eye, is great. It made me rediscover this awesome movie in all its glory. The package itself is very nice, packed with an extras CD, a poster (folded) and a very nice booklet with articles and plenty of pictures. This package takes me back to the days of the original release of that movie. If you're nostalgic or if you merely want to watch this movie for the first time, this is a great package for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Conan" lässt Howard's Werke eindrucksvoll auferstehen.
