Luthor: Dc Black Label Edition Paperback – November 12, 2019

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 411 ratings

Superman has been called many things since he first appeared in the skies above Metropolis: the Man of Steel, the World's Greatest Hero--even the Big Blue Boy Scout. Now his oldest and most implacable foe has given him a new title: Humanity's Greatest Threat.

In this compelling study of the ultimate clash of wills, the New York Times bestselling and Eisner Award-winning team of writer Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermejo (
Batman: Damned, Joker) opens the mind of Lex Luthor to reveal the true motivations behind his legendary animosity toward the Last Son of Krypton--as well as his ultimate plan to defeat his invulnerable adversary.

WHEN I SEE YOU, I SEE SOMETHING NO MAN CAN EVER BE. I SEE THE END. THE END OF OUR POTENTIAL. THE END OF OUR ACHIEVEMENTS. THE END OF OUR DREAMS. YOU ARE MY NIGHTMARE.

Being a Superman fan since the late 50s, Luthor was always the villain. This story is from his point of view where he, as an Alpha human male, sees Superman & his actions as an invasion. I'm glad I bought this one.

Honestly, I expected more, and all it was was... exactly what I thought it'd be. I thought there'd be a bit more to it. Some deeper, better reasoning. A way to better empathize with Lex. And this was about as basic as I thought it might be, which ends up as a disappointment. Finished it in a few hours. Was a good, solid comic. Cool. But not great. And not anything I wish I had bought. I'd say it's a 3 1/2 star comic. The art is incredible in it. And I'm sure it's a great comic for Superman/Lex fans, but to me, it just wasn't enough.

I've had a real appreciation for Lex Luthor's quality as a villain over the years, at least in some incarnations (really loved him in Young Justice), but I really like the idea that his fears about what Superman's presence means for mankind's future isn't some cynical pose covering up the threat Superman represents to Luthor's own ego and legacy.

As Christina Dee put it in her long-running Cat Tales, the normal take on Luthor is never had to suffer the indignity of there existing honors he couldn't earn or buy until the Man of Steel came knocking, hence his hatred. But here it's genuinely not his ego, or at least not primarily his ego, driving his decisions.

Lex falls in love with his Vision... its cool how little Superman is in this story. Its even cooler adding Bruce Wayne in as 2 rich dudes bro down over dinner. Cool story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Luthor
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 9, 2023
Lex Luthor knows how great mankind's potential is and he is willing to expand his vast resources to encourage society's development. He truly feels that humanity is stagnating due to a malign influence: The very existence of the so called Man of Steel.

Azzarello's punchy storyline encourages readers to question Superman's effect not only on the city of Metropolis, but in the whole world. It's easy to see Kal-El as a beacon of hope but, with a slight shift of perspective, Luthor's fear is also possible. The very presence of Superman could make people over reliant on him to sort out all their problems, causing all that is good about mankind to wither on the vine.
