Abnett and Lannings work establishing the cosmic setting of the Marvel Universe has been nothing short of fantastic. Being unfamiliar with their work prior to Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, I have been consistently impressed with their ability to interweave large story arcs, with a multitude of players, giving time to develop individual characters and never lose the reader attention (or at least mine).

Realm of Kings is in a way a lull between the storms as the various sides of the War of Kings battle begin to pick up the pieces. Never before have I cared for the Inhumans and the Shiar Imperial Guard. I was truly engaged with learning the quirks, personalities and power sets of these characters that had previously been little more than cool designs in the background of other books.

The one-shot opens the book to a breadth of possibilities and perfectly sets the mood of the eerie possibilities to come. This one-shot is followed by the inhumnas miniseries which is easily the strongest collection of stories. The interactions between the characters is wonderful to follow and the developments that transpire were completely unexpected.

The imperial guard miniseries was strong but did not extend much beyond your average superhero comic. The emphasis in this miniseries was on the battles of the imperial guard as they attempt to maintain order within the Shiar empire and also against the threats of the fault. Small character moments and distinguishable personalities are the most engaging aspect of this story, and I still highly recommend reading through this.

However, the final story, the Son of Hulk storyline the only storyline not written by Abnett and Lanning is set not surprisingly on the outskirts of the larger cosmic events. I appreciate the effort to reach out and tell more stories with this, but as this story does not play into the larger occurences of the story Abnett and Lanning have laid out this story needed to stand on its own merit to be enjoyable, and unfortunately it does not. The intentions of the characters as well as the intentions of what the writer hoped to accomplish with these characters are unclear. Characters meander through plot points and character motivations are questionable. Perhaps this sets the stage for something down the line, but ultimately I found this story uninteresting and not worth the time.

Though I have spoken only of the stories, the artwork for all the stories is fantastic. As I said some of the best aspects of the issues are the individual character moments and these are due in no small part to the detail and expertise of the artists.

Overall a very enjoyable read. Somewhat quieter in terms of action than the last few events, but the energy is maintained through the strengths and personalities of the spotlighted characters.

I waited a long time for this to be released after the War of Kings book. I was disappointed. The War of Kings book was one of my favorites but Realm of Kings was a missed opportunity. The X-Men that were present throughout the Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire, Emperor Vulcan and War of Kings just get dumped in one line of dialogue saying that they are back on earth. They aren't in any current books so kind of a big what the? moment. Overall this book is three mini series collected in one hardcover. The Inhumans series is the best and a good read. Imperial Guard is okay but has terrible artwork. I hope Kevin Walker doesn't do another book I'm interested in. The Son of Hulk doesn't even belong here. Scott Reed is out of his league here when compared to Abnett and Lanning. If you have War of Kings, you will buy this because you want to know what happens. Nothing really happens though, it is just a set up for the Fault as a way to use any dimension or alternate universe Marvel wants to use. I hope the next book lives up to the previous books in the cosmic line. I highly recommend Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire (Brubaker was underrated on Uncanny X-Men) and War of Kings (what a finish!).

Realm of Kings Hardcover collection is a great read if you are into the cosmic aspects of the Marvel Universe. Its not that great though if you aren't familiar with the previous cosmic storylines especially War of Kings (which is highly recommended and worth every penny). The HC collection has a lot of story. 2 mini series and one shot. The one shot that starts it off is really quite good and Abnett & Lanning do a great job setting up the new status of the marvel cosmic universe. The next 2 mini written by Abnett & Lanning are great pieces on the inhumans and the Imperial guard. The art was great and the story telling hooked me but left me longing for more.

My biggest issue was the final story. Son of Hulk. I found extremely hard to understand what was going on and i very familiar with the marvel universe. The story was not that engaging and the art really didn't have great layouts. It was bummer to end this great collection on a down note.

the other problem is that the story is not resolved and you are left with a lot of questions when it ends.
