Jason Aaron, the hot new writer of the critically acclaimed series THE OTHER SIDE, teams with gritty artist R.M. Guéra for an intense crime drama that mixes organized crime with current Native American culture. This special low-priced volume collects the first five issues of the riveting Vertigo series SCALPED. Fifteen years ago, Dashiell "Dash" Bad Horse ran away from a life of abject poverty and utter hopelessness on the Prairie Rose Indian Reservation searching for something better. Now he's come back home armed with nothing but a set of nunchucs, a hell-bent-for-leather attitude and one dark secret, to find nothing much has changed on "The Rez" — short of a glimmering new casino, and a once-proud people overcome by drugs and organized crime. Is he here to set things right or just get a piece of the action?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Aaron's reservation setting, described by a character in the first chapter as a third world nation in the heart of America, is perfect for a story of crime and family. Dash Bad Horse has come back to the reservation he ran away from at age 13. Now he enforces the law in a land where many have given up hope. Bad Horse is also an undercover FBI agent, put back in his home so federal authorities can take down crime boss and casino owner Lincoln Red Crow. Aaron masterfully depicts Bad Horse's tortured split psychology. The character is tough as nails and switches quickly between displaying likable and unlikable behavior. The family dynamics, which includes Bad Horse's activist mother and Red Crow's wild daughter, could come off as soap opera, but Aaron knows how to use personal relationships to explain character and setting. The world of the Prairie Rose Reservation is full of life thanks to the art of Guera, somewhat in the vein of Eduardo Risso's on 100 Bullets. His characters contain a certain amount of grace no matter how ugly the situations get. The second story collected in the book is the flashback-heavy Hoka Hey, which shows that Aaron has a complex history planned for these characters. (Aug.)

Fantastic Crime Fiction!
I picked up the first two trades of Scalped by Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera and thoroughly enjoyed both. This is good, adult crime drama from DC Comics' Vertigo line. I need to pick up volume 3. Recommended for fans of crime and thriller comics and shows like Longmire or Yellowstone. Not for the kiddies.

The protagonist: A hard as nails nunchak-wielding Indian FBI Agent who is a master of Tae Kwon Do and the art of stomping people's brains out. The Villain: A former "Red Power" Indian activist turned Crime Boss and Casino Owner with a penchant for scalping. The Supporting cast: A beautiful drug-addicted alcoholic suffering from nymphomania (the Crime Boss' daughter), and one lone woman standing against the forces of corruption threatening to tear her community apart (the mother of the proverbial hero of the story). Enough to get you interested yet? But wait...there's more! Throw in a mystery surrounding the events that led to Dashiel Bad Horse (our FBI agent) returning to the Prairie Rose Reservation which he escaped from when only 13, and why a certain FBI superior blackmails him into doing the Bureau's bidding, coupled with the relationship between his mother and Boss Lincoln Red Crow as well as the romantic attentions of the enemy's daughter...Isn't this enough to make you want to pick up this book? Trust me, there's still more, but I don't want to ruin it for anyone. I'll finish by saying this: Scalped is the best comic book out there at the moment. Buy it if you like a fast-paced narrative with lots of action and intrigue (meant for mature readers; this is DC's Vertigo imprint after all), as well as some pretty amazing art. I simply can't recommend it highly enough.

I purchased Scalped Vol. 1: Indian Country when I saw the iFanboy guys talking about it. It sounded different, and interesting, and most of all it wasn't a traditional capes and cowls comic. This trade features the first 5 issues of the monthly comic. It took me until chapter 2 or 3 to really get into it and understand what was going on, once you do, it's a hell of a ride. The combination of writing, script, and art makes you feel like you're there on "The Rez" with everyone else, like you're right in the thick of it. I remember cursing aloud when Dash did something stupid when it was obvious he shouldn't have. The characters are written extremely well, by the end of Indian Country you pretty much know the main players and the histories between them. I had a feeling of knowing them intimately when I finished this book. Another great thing about this book is that the characters actually speak Lakotan to one another. Not being of American Indian descent, I don't know what the hell they are saying, but you can pretty much piece it together from the surrounding dialogue. The twists in this story are great too, 2 big ones in Indian Country. I'm just waiting to get through a few more books and I'll be checking out the 2nd trade, "Casino Boogie".

I just got my copy of Scalped Vol 1: Indian Country last night and churned my way through it in one sitting. It was impossible to put down. The characters in this story are intensly messy on various emoitional levels and I have to say, that's the attraction really. I think a lot of readers can relate to non-perfect characters with equally intriguing, yet complicated, messy lives. The story in volume one is relentless in dragging you into this world. Add to this, the political and cultural elements of an indigenous culture in a white man's world and it's just unmissable reading. That is as gritty as it is real. I particuarly like the relationship between bad horse and his mother and want far more of this revealed. I can't wait to invest myself into this series.

This volume is primarily exposition and "world building," but it is still remarkable. The story is sad, beautifully drawn, and feels genuine. It's definitely noir, with all of the gritty action and darkness that the genre requires. In some ways it's a bit of Sin City meets the Rez, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Having spent a bit of time on the reservation that inspired the setting for this story, I think the bleak picture for the Rez inhabitants is (unfortunately) true to life.

Having read volume 2 as well, I can say this only gets to be even "more": more sad, more complicated, more infuriating, more interesting. Read it!

After hearing almost nothing but ecstatic reviews about this I've finally read it and I'm pretty underwhelmed. The book gets compared to the Sopranos a lot, but its a lot closer to the Shield: cheap cynicism masquerading as realism. It depicts Native Americans as nothing but drunks, drug addicts and thugs. You can do a google on "scalped comic" to see what real Native Americans think about this.

Maybe the series gets better and presents a more balanced, realistic view of this world later on but the first book was a let-down.

Smartly written and well-drawn, I really loved these books. Scalped gives you a look at an American socio-environmental that's only marginally fictionalized, and one very few Americans bother thinking about in this day and age; the reservations. The story manages to be compelling and interesting throughout the run, while side-stepping the cheesiness that seems to find its way into many comics. Most of the characters, while not all likeable, lend a great deal to the page and you may even get attached to one or two before long. Not many graphic novels are of quite the same caliber as this one.

This is a good story and it has my attention. Sometimes I like comics (graphic novels) as gravy for the brain after work. A real book takes more concentration. The language is rough. I used to work in inner city Pittsburgh and those foul mouths would blush at some of the stuff from this comic.

Scalped is a series that everyone who loves crime novels should read, I know comic books are really hard to understand what with the character who is speaking having a bubble coming out of his mouth and everything but get over it and read Scalped, it's the grittiest look at America in books today.
