Volkswagen XL1 to Be Sold in Limited Quantities Next Year
Last month, we caught glimpses of the Volkswagen XL1 being tested, and now reports are coming out of the 2012 Paris Motor Show that confirm the XL1 will head to dealerships in limited quantities next year.
The XL1 is expected to get upwards of 235 mpg and is powered by a two-cylinder, 800-cc diesel powerplant with 48 hp and 88 lb-ft of torque. The engine is combined with a 30 hp electric motor and a seven-speed DSG transmission.
In addition, the German automaker confirmed that an electric Up variant will go on sale next year and it will be Volkswagen’s first production EV. A plug-in hybrid variant of the new Golf will come in 2014.
As for what’s not coming? The Bulli Microbus, despite reports that VW has a crossover based on it under consideration. A Volkswagen board member noted that there’s a shortage of demand for the Bulli and for now is shelved.

If this car really get 235 mpg I dont understand why they aren't selling more. I mean I understand their gimmick with only selling a limited amount, but I think there gimmick is going to hurt more than help. Unless Volkswagon has a bigger plan with this car, I don't understand their strategy.
