Abstract
This article presents an overview of the reference dictionaries of French and discusses their normative function. The first section briefly delineates the relationship between normativity and dictionaries; the second section offers an historical overview of French normative dictionaries. In the third part, some of the most important works of the modern French-speaking lexicography are presented by country: France, Switzerland, Belgium, Quebec, Africa as well as dictionaries of the whole francophonie. In the last section there are some conclusive remarks.
