Fortress of the middle of the thirteenth century, the Ortenbourg castle takes place on the town of Scherwiller, in the department of Bas-Rhin, just a few kilometers from Sélestat. The ruins of the building rise on a rocky peak at 437 meters above sea level.
Entirely built of smooth, white granite, the Ortenbourg Castle is an excellent example of medieval Alsace's military architecture. One can still admire a pentagonal dungeon more than thirty meters high, a rampart of seventeen meters equipped with three rows of archers, and finally a seigniorial dwelling with Gothic windows.
Property of the municipality since the 1960s, it is maintained by various associations of Scherwiller.
