รวมเรื่องสั้น(มากๆ) 3 เรื่อง 3 แนวของอสิมอฟ
ทั้ง 3 เรื่องมีแกนสำคัญคือพลังของเทคโนโลยีมีกระทบต่อชีวิตของมนุษย์ นำทีมโดยเรื่องเด่นของเล่ม คือ Franchise ในวันที่เทคโนโลยีสามารถให้ผลการเลือกตั้งได้เพียงแค่สอบถามข้อมูลจากตัวแทนประชาชนผู้ถูกคัดเลือกคนหนึ่ง ทำให้การเลือกตั้งประธานาบดีสหรัฐ ไม่จำเป็นต้องให้คนทั้งประเทศออกเสียงอีกแล้ว เพียงแค่ให้ประชาชนผู้ถูกเลือกเป็นผู้มีสิทธิลงคะแนนเพียงคนเดียว เป็นตัวแทนคนทั้งประเทศ ก็มีผลเป็นการเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดีแล้ว
เรื่องนี้ผมว่าจิกกัดประชดประชันแบบแสบสันต์ ในเรื่องเจตจำนงของประชาชน ในเมื่อประชาชนทุกคนคือตัวแทนเจตจำนงของความเป็นชาติ งั้นจะเสียเวลาให้ประชาชนทุกคนลงคะแนนทำไม ก็เอาคนเดียวมันนี่แหละพอแล้ว เป็นเจตจำนงของประชาชน ของชาติเหมือนกันนั่นแหละ (บ้าบอมาก) บวกกับการที่เราเชื่อมั่นในเทคโนโลยีจนยกภาระหนักอึ้งที่ส่งผลต่อคนทั้งประเทศให้กับคอมพิวเตอร์เครื่องนึง ไม่มีใครมาตั้งคำถามว่ามันทำงานยังไง ประมวลยังไง เชื่อมั่นโดยไม่สงสัย ซึ่งความบ้าบอนี้สะท้อนออกมาจากการที่เครื่องคอมตัวนี้ ถามคำถามต่อตัวเอกของเราที่จะเป็นตัวชี้วัดถึงการเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดีว่า “คุณคิดว่าไข่แพงมั้ย” นี่มัน WTF จริงๆ
เรื่องที่สอง คือเรื่องของหุ่นยนต์ที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นคนรับใช้ภายในบ้าน เรื่องนี้อ่านไปก็งงว่าทิศทางของเรื่องนี้งงมากว่าจะพาไปทางไหน แต่พอตอนจบของเรื่องทำให้รู้สึกสยองๆแบบ creepy ทำให้รู้ว่าความสงสัยนี่เป็นเมล็ดพันธ์ชั้นดีของความกลัวจริงๆ
เรื่องสุดท้าย คือ เรื่องของนักเขียนที่ซื้อเครื่องเขียนมาใหม่ที่จะช่วยเขาเขียนงานได้แบบอัตโนมัติ ประสิทธิภาพของเครื่องนั้นดีมาก มันสามารถเรียนรู้อะไรหลายๆอย่างได้ด้วยตนเอง และการเรียนรู้นี้สุดท้ายแล้วอาจช่วงชิงความหมายในการมีชีวิตของคนๆหนึ่งได้เลยทีเดียว
ทั้งสามเรื่องนี้ ผมว่าให้ความบันเทิงในแบบการจิกกัดได้ดีมากๆครับ เทคโนโลยีเป็นสิ่งที่ดีนะครับ มันช่วยเหลือเราให้ได้รับความสะดวกสบาย แต่ในทางกลับกันมันก็กลับมายึดครองคุณค่าต่างๆของเราเป็นค่าตอบแทนการช่วยเหลือเช่นเดียวกัน จะใช้มันอย่างไรคงขึ้นอยู่กับว่ามนุษย์เข้าใจมันมากแค่ไหน แต่ใครละครับที่จะจะเก่งขนาดเข้าใจพวกมันได้ขนาดนั้น จริงมั้ยครับ …..

C’est une nouvelle (pour les stats Goodreads) et la traduction est pas géniale (c’est un cadeau). Mais Asimov qui raconte Predikon poussé à son extrême (prédire une élection à l’aide d’un seul électeur) ça se rate pas.

Très court texte du célébrissime Asimov, publié pour la première fois en 1955.
Cette nouvelle prend pour cadre une Amérique ultra-moderne (pour des yeux de 1955) en 2008 je crois, alors que les élections vont se tenir, comme il se doit, au mois de novembre. Sauf que dans ces USA modernes, on en a fini des élections d'antan où tout un chacun allait mettre son bulletin dans l'urne.
Non, dans cette nation moderne, c'est un super ordinateur qui désigne le président, sur la base d'une série de questions posées à UNE seule personne, elle-même tirée au sort. À partir des réponses obtenues, le super calculateur détermine quel candidat remporte l'élection.
L'idée de faire reposer le destin d'une élection démocratique sur une seule personne est intéressante et un peu flippante, poussant très loin l'extrapolation autour de la spéculation sondagière et de ses dérives éventuelles.
Comme toujours avec cette collection (Les dyschroniques), il est plaisant de (re)découvrir ces vieux textes qui, s'ils ne mettent pas dans le mille à tous les coups (certains sont quand même bluffant), nous font réfléchir et donnent à voir une vision du futur à un instant T, avec ce que ça comprend de naïveté et d'erreurs, mais hé ! c'est ce qui rend la chose belle !
En revanche, je continue à trouver sue cette collection, toute qualitative qu'elle soit, est un brin chère. Le présent titre revient à 4 euros pour une cinquantaine de pages, et c'est dommage.
Alors je sais bien que les anthologies, ça fait plus rêver grand monde, mais 4 euros les 50 pages, ça va quand même bien doucher l'enthousiasme des lecteurs, même si l'expérience prouve que des pig... gens comme moi font l'investissement malgré tout.
À lire si vous pouvez vous permettre de l'acheter, sinon, je vous souhaite d'avoir près de chez vous une bibliothèque qui a accepté de l'acheter, même si je sais d'expérience personnelle que ce genre de prix pour de si petits livres sont souvent rédhibitoires... Dommage, dommage...

Really enjoyable science fiction read. Kind of absurdist. Takes place in a futuristic world (2008, since this was written in 1955) where a machine can tell how the American people would vote from a single person. Great character development.
I think the lesson, if there is one, is that we should cherish the fact that every person gets to use their judgment to vote.
A tangential thoughts that this provoked: The grandfather who remembers voting says how his vote counted the same as anyone else's.. you know who wins by counting up the votes. Yes. That's how it should be. SCREW THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE! I think it's an example, similar to Multivac in the story, of humans overcomplicating something that is best served by a simple majority.

A short and brilliant thought-experiment on how the responsibility of one-man voting might play out. Asimov takes a simple trope - seat prediction from vote counting - and works it into a funny, clever discussion of how the electoral pressures we feel now are utterly and necessarily divorced from the reality of true choice.

suis tombé par hasard dans une librairie sur cette nouvelle d'asimov dont j'avais souvent entendu parlé. ça raconte des États-Unis ou un ordinateur peut mettre au point des sondages et analyses tellement précises qu'il n'y a plus besoin que d'un électeur par an pour prendre toutes les décisions et élire les représentants politiques

En un momento en que la política es un ámbito ya muy degradado y el ciudadano opta por una actitud de indiferencia hacia ella, este relato corto pone sobre la mesa una idea distópica e inquietante.
Qué pasaría si en el futuro las máquinas decidieran el rumbo de la cosa pública, si todo se redujera a estadísticas y tendencias medibles, y donde el ciudadano queda reducido a una mínima variable a considerar? En aquel futuro imaginado por Asimov en este asombroso relato, la política es dirigida por las predicciones programadas de una máquina (Multivac, un ubicuo ordenador constante en el universo asimoviano y gran protagonista de "La última pregunta"), las libertades civiles han quedado anuladas en medio de un paternalismo hedonista y un solo ciudadano es la muestra total que indica cómo votarán todos los demás. De manera nostálgica, uno de los protagonistas, el abuelo, recuerda cuando el voto de cada ciudadano valía, cuando el poder de decisión sobre el rumbo de un Estado residía en la sociedad, hasta que un buen día los humanos ultracomplicaron el proceso, fue imposible el consenso, el voto mayoritario dejó de valer y se prefirió que las computadoras decidieran por nosotros...
Narración de honda reflexión política, Asimov nos lleva a plantearnos en ella las implicaciones de abdicar nuestra voluntad, de romper el contrato social y entregar el destino de la humanidad a las tendencias medibles de un programa informático. Cuánta libertad estamos dispuestos a ceder???

Très courte nouvelle. L'idée, une démocratie réduite au vote d'une personne choisie par une machine algorithmique et censée représenter l'ensemble du corps électoral, est une séduisante métaphore ad extremum du sondagisme. La narration est maligne – portée par le décalage du dialogue petite-fille qui ne comprend pas ce qu'était une élection représentative/grand-père-c'était-mieux-avant – quoiqu'assez simpliste. Un texte à une idée.
Reste un détail amusant : l'homme qui pense enfin voir "la" machine est déçu qu'elle soit si peu impressionnante. Ordinarité de l'extraordinaire.

L'idée d'Asimov est géniale mais il aurait dû en faire un roman, plutôt qu'une nouvelle. En effet, la chute est... absente.

Collected in Earth Is Room Enough and Robot Dreams, the future of the USA is an electronic democracy. Norman Muller's family is excited as there seems to be heavy presence of security in their state, so maybe it is time for one of them to get lucky! It has been determined by Multivac that one can extrapolate the results of any election , but ... the real question whether the unreliability of human nature will mess up this prediction? This is one of those short stories that will stick in one's mind as one ponders the possibilities should such an event come to pass.

I read this for college—can't believe everything I read these days is just for school—and, for a really short story, it has an incredible world-building that really immerses you in the dystopian society the characters live in. Speaking of which, the author doesn't delve deep into their characters personalities and traits by exhaustive descriptions—probably because of the length of this work, but with the help of the dialogues and actions, you can have a pretty accurate picture of who they are and the part they play in the story. I think it's awesome the way this works as both social criticism and literature piece.

Un reproche néanmoins, le texte bien écrit à mal vieilli en raison des détails : On se retrouve ici avec un Multivac long de deux kilomètres et haut de trois étages, et des journaux qui « analys[ent] la situation à l’aide d’énormes ordinateurs industriels » (p. 6).

Second story in The Complete Stories, volume 1. Appropriately entertaining and engaging for its short length, but it isn't a standout.
