The first section focuses on the writer's childhood. Product of both the liberal bourgeoisie and of a rural society, Jacques Ferron inherits a certain mistrust regarding nationalism; however, born in an era where the elite had a great deal of influence over local culture, he is influenced by this trend. In the second section, the author's adolescence is examined, along with his years of study at College Jean-de-Brebeuf. This period of his life briefly emphasizes his "aristocratic" leanings and accentuates, against the attitude of the time, his predispositions towards individualism. His appreciation of beauty leads to a loss of interest in politics, and his early literary essays take no political stand whatsoever. The third part concerns the tumultuous years which precede the settling down of Dr. Ferron in Longueuil. In 1941, the young man enrolls in medical school at Laval University, and then spends a year in the Canadian army; discharged in 1946, he moves to Gaspesie. His first stories, born of a tension between the two cultural universes that influenced his sensibility, are from this period. Faced with poverty, all around him, he declares himself a Communist and from this moment on, considers it essential that the elite give up their privileges and stand up for the most destitute around them.
The autobiographical, in Ferron's works, will be coloured by these choices made in his youth. The author often evokes his childhood through self-analysis; he does not speak willingly of his years of study, nor of his stay in the army, but deals abundantly with his years in Gaspesie. It turns out, all things considered, that this literary "revisionism" is the very form of literary creation found in this author's works. The journey of young Ferron illustrate the paradox of a man born in a well-to-do family, taught to appreciate fine art, predestined to an uneventful career, and who one day turns away from this destiny owing to his social convictions.

A sense of place has been the constant leitmotif in quebecoi's literature from the first rural novel published in 1846 to modern works such as jacques ferron's novels. Place as a leitmotif is of such importance in french canadian and quebecois literature that it can be seen to have given shape and expression to the real place or country. Striving towards an expression of nationhood and patriotism both in the 19th century rural novel, and in jacques ferron's need to name a country in the making, testifies to a constant longing for lasting mile stones and a coherent vision. The quest is by its very nature an attempt to compensate for instability

Those precisions made, I shall analyse the presence of Marvelous Realism in Ferron's Contes with the stylistic and/or structural traits of Mary-Ellen Ross, Charles Scheel, Cecilia Ponte and Irlemar Chiampi among others.
The second part of my thesis is composed of short stories that will enlightened, by the events, or by the narration, certain aspects of Marvelous Realism.

We have divided the work into two complementary objectives. Firstly, to find the sources Ferron quoted in order to put them against the three little stories he has written. The reader can therefore observe the different types of modifications the writer has operated in his sources.
The second objective of our research is a detailed analysis of the most important "deviation" cases: the counterfeiting and the copying; two procedures that permit Ferron to erase the first occurrence of a quotation.
Our goal is not to accuse Ferron of plagiarism which is of no interest due to the fact that we are not analysing the writings of a historian, but those of a writer. We do however, want to emphasize the importance of "intertextuality" in Ferron's inspiration and composition of three little stories.

This thesis proposes to analyse four Francophone novels from three different regions ofAmerica : La Lézarde by Édouard Glissant (1958; French Antilles), La nuit by Jacques Ferron (1965; Quebec), Prochain épisode by Hubert Aquin (1965; Quebec) and Mûr à crever by Frankétienne (1968; Haiti). Each of these novels brings about a shift in how novels are conceived in their respective literary traditions (Quebec, Haiti, French Antilles). A close reading of each work shows that the reading difficulties provoked are the result of a refusal to adhere to certain conventions, some of which are intrinsic to fictional narratives and others which determine all forms of linguistic communication. It can therefore be said that such narratives are “non-rational”. Following this close reading, the links between each text and its context are revealed. In Quebec, the novels of Aquin and Ferron, along with Nicole Brossard’s Désert mauve (1987), bear witness toa new type of literary engagement which favours illegibility. With Glissant, the fact that a literary text is not easily readable is meant to promote opacity which, in turn, aims at conceiving identity and history differently. With Frankétienne, the indeterminacy brought about by “non-rational enunciation” seeks a shift in the reader’s point of view.In each of the aforementioned works, enunciation carries a socio-aesthetic function whereby activism is carried not only by the story told, but also by the storytelling
Arseneau, Elisabeth.
