Heidekind is a German variety of speedwell with a poetic name: Heath Baby. Its flowering spikes truly look like those of heather, but they show its rich colour much earlier – from the beginning of summer. In early or mid-June rise 30-40 tall stems with 8-12 cm long spikes of vibrant lilac pink flowers, opening top to toe. If you deadhead them just after flowering (withing about 3 weeks) they rebloom in further one or two flushes until early autumn if grown in humus-rich soil.
Leaves are narrowly lanceolate, serrated at margins, medium green. The plant forms a compact and strictly upright clump suitable for a rock garden, perennial border as well as a pot.
Speedwell will grow in any moist but well-drained, reasonably fertile soil, preferably in full sun but partial shade will do no harm. Regular feeding will encourage formation of new flowers throughout the season. Hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3), and will grow well in a container, too, where the soil should never dry out.
