'Joanes or the Basque Whaler'.

Guillermo Zubiaga is an illustrator-comic book artist from the Basque Country (Spain & France) but working and living in New York since the early 2000s. He began his professional career working as assistant animator and game designer for Animotion Inc, Syracuse N.Y. In 1996 he moved from Syracuse to New York City and shortly after he began working for the comic industry. He did his first comic book work for Marvel's 'X-Force' title, at first as a ghost artist for Adam Pollina but then as a credited assistant-penciler. From 2000 to 2001 he worked as a toy designer drawing control art for action figures in licenses such as Marvel Comics, DC and Images comics and as a background penciler for the titles 'Nosferatu 1922' and 'Witchblade Infinity'.

Zubiaga also participated as an assistant-penciler on the DC/Vertigo title 'Big Daddy Danger'. In 2003, he began working as an inker on such comic books as Dark Horse's 'B.P.R.D.' and Image's graphic novel 'The Romp'. In addition to that he has partaken in a myriad of collaborations and projects such as the development of conceptual theatrical and visual effect designs for a Carnival Spectacular show for Radio City Music Hall. In 2007 Zubiaga created his own series 'Joanes or the Basque whaler', a graphic novel trilogy published by the University of Nevada since 2009. This Basque whaling saga is most likely the first (and only) Basque-American comic published to date.
