Big new project incoming! I’m working on a children’s book called Creative Little Monsters 👹 Creative Little Monsters is about the messy crazy creativity we all had as kids. I personally remember a huge refrigerator cardboard box being me and my sisters favorite “toy” of all time. Us and our friends were obsessed with making ourselves as ugly as possible with my mom’s makeup samples. I would also crush rocks into powder, mix them with water, and use it as paint 🎨 I made earrings out of bird feathers I found outside. You get the picture. Anyway I’ve worked in children’s publishing before, but this project is a little different. The author and owner of Made By Things, Matt Vojacek. is working on a kickstarter to get this thing off the ground. The final dollar amount is fairly low for the kickstarter, because this is more about gauging interest and figuring out an appropriate quantity for a first print run. While this is obviously a print project, we also have some plans for ✨ animated ✨ work as well! But only if we can get the book into production first. This is when things get real! ... You don't realize all that goes into creating a children's book until you actually do it. At least, I sure didn't!... until I did! ... People are out there that would have you thinking it happens overnight! ... Maybe I'm just slow. Maybe I'm a little picky. ... Whatever the case, it usually takes about a year for me to bring my idea to life in a way that I can feel proud to share. ... Lou Can Too was actually written right after Bigger Diggers was published. I knew, immediately, that there was more for these machines I had just created. ... I sat with the story a while, as I usually do, because illustration does not come easily to me. How do I want the imagery to bring the words to life? What kinds of scenery will need to be developed? What will new characters look like? ... Along the way, as I illustrate, if I'm being totally honest.... I almost quit at least 2-3 times! It never fails that I have moments that I think, "Whyyyyy???? ...do I even do this?! It's all wrong! I need an illustrator!" ... So, I let it sit. ...might be days... might be weeks.... until I pick it up again. ... But, I do. I pick it up and start again. ... Just like life.... It isn't always lining up the way you expect it to, so sometimes you have to just sit with it a bit. Sometimes you have to just NOT PUSH or force it. Let things breathe. ... It's amazing to see the transformation of a story from just a passing thought. ... It's even more amazing to observe your life that way. 😉✨️ ... Start. Take the time you need. Pause when necessary. ...
