Those of us who work on #equality, #unconscious #bias, #internalised #sexism & #DEI issues know Gender bias is a pervasive problem worldwide. And know how entrenched gendered social norms still curtail women’s chances in all domains. Still, it is SHOCKING to see the extent of the latest UN report on the topic : 👉🏽 covering 85% of global population, it shows that 9 out of 10 people - of all genders- have a bias against women! 🤯 👉🏽 Details of the UN Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI): - The index quantifies biases against women, capturing people’s attitudes on women’s roles along four key dimensions: political, educational, economic and physical integrity. - The results reveal that close to 9 out of 10 men and women hold fundamental biases against women. Could hardly be worst! - Nearly 50% of the world’s people believe that men make better political leaders than women do. - 40% believe men are better business executives. - ¼ of the people believe it is justified for men to beat their wives.🤯 It also shows that: - Bias against women is as bad as it was a decade ago and gender equality progress has gone into reverse. - Gender biases are pronounced in both low and high Human Development Index (HDI) countries. - They hold across regions, income, level of development and cultures—making them a global issue. A never ending vicious cycle? - Biased gender social norms—the undervaluation of women’s capabilities and rights in society—constrain women’s choices and opportunities by regulating behaviour and setting the boundaries of what women are expected to do and be. - Biased gender social norms are a major impediment to achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. - Without tackling biased gender social norms, we will NOT achieve gender equality or the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Researchers are dismayed at the outcomes & lack of progress… …So am I! #equality #genderequality #unconsciousbias #UN #leadership #democracy #humanrights #womenrights #women #girls #progressive #values Article here: https://lnkd.in/esJ-WUZ5 https://lnkd.in/eECbRn3v Monica Macovei Camilla Brückner United Nations UN Women UNDP Evelyn Regner Heidi Hautala Robert Baker Joanna Maycock Isabella Lenarduzzi RTBF Shéhérazade Semsar-de Boisséson Ann Mettler Monika Sikora Chiara Adamo Chiara Tamburini, PhD Anna Ollé Carpintero Manuela Doutel Haghighi Joyce Pafort Georgia Brooks Berta European Leadership Academy Silvana Koch-Mehrin Esmeralda de Belgique Barbara Rambousek Louise Langeby Pastora Valero Rebeca De Sancho Mayoral Marguerite Soeteman-Reijnen Elizabeth Kuiper Dr. Audrey-Flore Ngomsik Hadja Lahbib Helena Malikova Hedwige Nuyens Heather Grabbe Iverna McGOWAN Joana Lacerda Minna Salami Silvana Koch-Mehrin Marlène Schiappa
