On October 24, The Peninsula New York unveiled a new art exhibit from renowned Chilean artist Iván Navarro. The installation, which showcases Navarro’s sculptural works made with neon, incandescent, and fluorescent light, is the latest iteration of the hotel’s commitment to spotlighting important artists from around the world.

The exhibit comprises nine of Navarro’s works, which are displayed throughout several of The Peninsula New York’s public spaces. Many take inspiration from the celestial sphere – for example, Nebula X and Nebula XI, both mounted in the hotel’s Palm Court, which use one-way mirrors illuminated by LED lights to depict clouds where stars are born; or Constellations (South) and Large Eclipse (Yellow), in the hotel’s reception area, which draw the viewer into the galactic realm and are focused on heavenly bodies and astronomical events.

Other works in the exhibit use Navarro’s signature materials – light and mirrors – to explore the concepts of safety and belonging. Located on the West Terrace of Salon de Ning entrance, Street Lamp presents an illuminated bench like a beacon of sanctuary and rest. And, prominently featured in the hotel’s Palm Court, is HOME, a work that plays upon the concepts of identity and place with mesmerizing kinetic patterns spelling the word “home”, seemingly into infinity. This piece was specially commissioned by The Peninsula Hotels as part of Art in Resonance, a global contemporary art program conceived as an opportunity to both inspire visitors and to draw attention to artists who are pushing the boundaries of their mediums, reflecting a deeper commitment to engage with the artistic sphere, not only as a venue but as an originator and innovator of culture.

“It is a great pleasure to share Iván’s work with our guests and with our community, which includes some of the world’s most discerning art enthusiasts,” said Rolf Buehlmann, General Manager at The Peninsula New York. “By hosting such thought-provoking installations, we hope our hotel will maintain its standing as a hub of artistic expression and cultural exchange.”

Iván Navarro’s artworks will be on display at The Peninsula New York through the end of the year. A celebratory cocktail reception with the artist will be taking place on November 15 with Templon gallery, art collectors, hotel guests, and special VIPs. About Iván Navarro
Born into a family of artists in Santiago, Chile, Iván Navarro grew up under the Pinochet regime before moving to New York in 1997. His artwork, which is strongly inspired by his homeland and influenced by the dictatorship, uses electrical energy as both metaphor and material; his sculptural light installations evoke questions of power, control, and imprisonment. The act of usurping the minimalist aesthetic is another ever-present undercurrent in his works, as is the use of everyday objects and materials to explore the extraordinary and transcendent Navarro’s work has been featured in exhibitions and permanent collections at some of the world’s most prominent art institutions, including the Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain; The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; among others. In 2009, he represented Chile in the 53rd Venice Biennale.
