Gaston Chaissac
Chaissac's work consequently confronts one with his own singular, unyielding existential solitude. It naturally bears the imprint of his origins and reveals a stubborn attachment to his native awkwardness, perceived as a mark of authenticity. And, in fact, in Chaissac's case, it was. Yet occasionally, in certain paintings, one feels the curtains part, the self-enclosed distress and sorrow dissipate, and we are presented with a brief, luminous breach in the clouds.
