Thomas Ruff He photographed the images in the same way as you would photograph a passport photo. He started off shooting them in only black and white and then moved to color. He started giving subjects a choice of which color back drop to use which resulted in the portrait saying a little more about the individual person. He then found the effect of color too dominating and decided to opt for a neutral and light background which made the subject more engaging for the viewer.
