      Critics Consensus

Though Streisand charms, she's miscast as the titular middle-aged widow in Gene Kelly's sluggish and over-produced final directorial effort.

John Huddy Miami Herald An old fashioned, rousing musical with some of the most spectacular singing and dancing numbers ever filmed. Jun 16, 2022 Full Review TIME Staff TIME Magazine It relies almost exclusively on the celebrated eyes, ears, nose and throat of Streisand. Her musicianship remains irreproachable. But her mannerisms are so arch and calculated that one half expects to find a key implanted in her back. Apr 2, 2019 Full Review David Parkinson Empire Magazine Emphasis has been placed on extravaganza, when it should really have been placed on getting good performances out of a talented cast. Rated: 3/5 Apr 2, 2019 Full Review Josh Larsen LarsenOnFilm ...fares best with the ensemble dance numbers that elegantly combine group movement and individual footwork. Rated: 2/4 Apr 2, 2019 Full Review TV Guide Staff TV Guide It's an exercise in star turns, surrounded by elephantine blandness. Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Robert Cushman The Spectator Hello, Dolly! is only the fourth best screen musical of 1969, and I find that a relaxing thought. Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

ForDiscordOnly For a movie made in the 60's, this aged well. The songs are catchy. The acting is funny. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/23 Full Review Alec B Its almost universally hated for some reason as if making a big, goofy, fun musical was a crime/too old fashioned in 1969 (seriously, had it been released one year earlier I doubt it would have this reputation). Streisand's just so charming in this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review David S I never could understand why there were so many negative reviews. Yes, Streisand was young for the part but she did her part really well. Kelly made a huge musical and it was the last of its kind. I enjoyed it in the theaters when it came out and I still enjoy it. If you like big musicals you will enjoy it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/23 Full Review Hannah M Critics are factually incorrect about this one I love watching Barbra Streisand gaslight a rich man into marrying her it's fabulous. Also that one song makes me think about Wall-e and makes me weep by association alone Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/13/23 Full Review Rita w I absolutely love this movie! Barbra Streisand is so incredibly talented, as is Matthau, Tune, and the entire cast. If you like musicals, you'll love this one! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/23 Full Review Alexander C Beautiful film coloring. Excellent, elaborate sets and costume design. Great singing with better pitch accuracy than most broadway performances. Humor which stands the test of time. Good audio quality so the actors could actually be heard clearly.
