Do You Remember The Best Goal Roberto Carlos Ever Scored? (Not That Free-Kick Against France)

Full-backs are rock stars in today's soccer.

Players like Reece James, Joao Cancelo and Achraf Hakimi are so important to their teams offensively, often providing goals and assists, despite being categorized as defenders.

But being a full-back never used to be sexy. Once upon a time a team's no.2 and no.3 barely ventured over the halfway line.

The revolution in Europe began in the 1990s, led by Brazilian left-back Roberto Carlos.

Carlos helped redesign the role of full-back. After starting his European adventure with Inter Milan, Carlos moved to Real Madrid in 1996 and the rest is history.

He scored 69 goals in 11 seasons for Real, helping the Spanish giants win four La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns.

Carlos also scored 11 goals at senior international goal for Brazil, including a science-defying free-kick against France in 1997.

That swervacious strike against France is widely considered to be the best goal Carlos ever scored.

But it was not. Not according to the man himself, at least.

In a recent interview with GOAL, Carlos was asked to pick his best ever goal and he chose the one he scored for Real against Tenerife in the Copa del Rey in 1998.

The goal in question was a vicious strike that somehow found the net from close to the corner flag.

Carlos recalled: "My best goal... you think I'm going to say the one against France, but I'm not.

"I'm going to say the one I scored against Tenerife at Real Madrid. It was a more complicated goal.

"The ball was meant to out of the pitch but I managed to score. But the goal against France kind of defined my career."
