2. OVERVIEW
• Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist.
• He developed the general theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of
modern physics (alongside quantum mechanics).
• Einstein's work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of
science.
• Einstein is best known in popular culture for his mass–energy
equivalence formula which has been dubbed "the world's most
famous equation".
• He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "services to
theoretical physics", in particular his discovery of the law of the
photoelectric effect (quantum theory).

4. EARLY CHILDHOOD AND SCHOOL
• In March 14, 1879 - Albert Einstein is born in Ulm, Germany, the first
child of Hermann and Pauline Einstein. One year later the Einstein
family moves to Munich, Germany.
• In 1885 Einstein enrols in the second grade of a Catholic elementary
school called the Petersschule. He receives Jewish religious
instruction at home and also begins taking violin lessons.
• Three years later he is accepted at the Luitpold Gymnasium. There he
meets the medical student Max Talmud who begins joining the
Einstein family regularly for dinner and introduces Albert to scientific
and philosophical writings.

6. RENOUNCING THE GERMAN CITIZENSHIP
• In 1894, the Einstein family moves to Milan, Italy, but Einstein remains in
Munich to complete his education at the Gymnasium. Einstein drops out
of the Luitpold Gymnasium and joins his family in Milan.
• In 1895, after failing the entry exam for the Zurich Polytechnic, Einstein
is accepted to the trade department of the cantonal school in Aarau,
Switzerland. He lives with the family of a teacher in Aarau.
• In January 28, 1896, Einstein officially renounces his German citizenship.
8. BECOMING A SWISS CITIZEN
• In 1896, Einstein begins studying at the Zurich Polytechnic in a teachers'
training program.
• In 1900 he receives his diploma as a mathematics teacher and starts
work on his doctoral thesis.
• In 1901, Einstein officially becomes a Swiss citizen. He works as a
temporary teacher at the Technical College in Winterthur, Switzerland.
• Soon after, he become a teacher at a private school in Schaffhausen,
Switzerland.
10. HIS CHILDREN
• Early 1902: Einstein and Mileva Maric's illegitimate daughter Lieserl is
born in Hungary.
• In the same year Einstein is hired as a patent officer in Bern.
• Einstein and Mileva are married in Bern, on January 6, 1903.
• In 1903 Einstein forms the Olympia Academy with his friends Maurice
Solovine and Conrad Habicht.
• In 1904 Hans Albert, Einstein and Mileva's first son, is born in Bern.
12. HONOURS AND DIPLOMAS
• In 1905, Einstein completes his paper on quantum theory. Einstein's
paper on Brownian motion is accepted by the Annalen der Physik. It was
followed by paper on the special theory of relativity which was
published in the same journal.
• In 1906, Einstein receives his doctorate from the University of Zurich and
2 years later becomes a privatdozent at Bern University.
• In 1909, Einstein is appointed extraordinary professor of theoretical
physics at Zurich University.
• One year later, Eduard, the Einsteins' second son, is born in Zurich.
• In January 30, 1912 Einstein is appointed professor of theoretical physics
at the Zurich Polytechnic.
13. SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
• In 1912, Einstein begins collaborating with Marcel Grossman about the
general theory of relativity. One year later he accepts a position at the
University of Berlin.
• In 1914, Einstein and Mileva separate, and she returns to Zurich with
their sons. Same year, Einstein signs a "Manifesto to the Europeans"
advocating his pacifist and internationalist ideals. He also completes his
formulation of the general theory of relativity.
• In 1917, Einstein moves into the apartment of his cousin Elsa in Berlin.
The Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics begins operating under
Einstein's management.
15. NOBEL PRIZE
• In 1919, Einstein and Mileva obtain a divorce. Einstein marries his cousin
Elsa in Berlin.
• In the same year, a solar eclipse has allowed scientists to observe
phenomena predicted by Einstein's general relativity theory, and news
of the theory's confirmation is announced at a ceremonial meeting of
the Royal Society of London. Einstein becomes famous.
• In 1921, Einstein visits the U.S. for the first time on a fundraising tour for
the establishment of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
• On November 9, 1922, Einstein wins the Nobel Prize for his work on
quantum theory.

17. NAZIS SEIZE POWER IN GERMANY
• On January 30, 1933, the Nazis seize power in Germany.
• Einstein resigns from the Prussian Academy of Sciences and declares
that he will not return to Germany.
• He moves to the United States with his wife and his secretary Helen
Dukas. In the same year Elsa Einstein dies in Princeton.

19. HIS LAST YEARS
• In 1939, Einstein signs a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt urging
the acceleration of atomic bomb development.
• In 1940, Einstein becomes an American citizen.
• On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima.
• On May 1948, the State of Israel is established by the United Nations.
• In November 1952, after Chaim Weizmann's death, Einstein is offered
the presidency of Israel. He declines.
• On April 18, 1955, Einstein dies in New Jersey.
• His body is cremated and his papers turned over to the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem.

21. EINSTEIN=GENIUS
• Einstein published more than 300 scientific papers along with over 150
non-scientific works.
• On 5 December 2014, universities and archives announced the release
of Einstein's papers, comprising more than 30,000 unique documents.
• Einstein's intellectual achievements and originality have made the word
"Einstein" synonymous with "genius".
