Biographie

  • For King and Country (formed in 2007) is a Christian alternative rock/pop duo comprised of Australian/American brotherw Joel and Luke Smallbone, hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.

Born in Sydney, Australia, but raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Joel and Luke’s father was a music promoter and strongly influenced the brothers’ musical participation. During high school the pair would contribute backing vocals to recordings of their sister Rebecca St. James, however by 2007 began performing on their own. Originally playing under the moniker Joel & Luke, this changed in 2008 with the release of their debut EP “A Tale of Two Towns”. Featuring many songs which would feature on later albums, the success of the EP led the band to sign with Warner Music Group. Whilst working with producer Ben Glover in the studio, he suggested the moniker For King and Country, which the brothers were taken by and decided to adopt.

Following a few years of honing their skills, For King and Country released the EP “For King & Country: The EP” in 2011. The record was led by the single “Busted Heart (Hold On To Me)” which charted at No. 3 on the Billboard’s Christian Songs Chart. The EP grew the anticipation for their feature full-length, which later arrived in February 2012. Entitled “Crave”, For King and Country’s debut full-length was extolled by music critics and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Christian Albums Chart. In support of the release the band toured on the 2012 Winter Jam Tour Spectacular, performed on the Mike Huckabee show on Fox News, and toured alongside Jason Castro and Dara Maclean.

Towards the tail-end of 2012 For King and Country released the Christmas song “Baby Boy”, which charted at No. 20 on the Billboard Top 100. The live album “Hope Is What We Crave: Live” followed in August 2013, led by the single of the same name. Following the release of the EP “Into the Silent Night: The EP” the band were awarded the GMA Dove Award for New Artist of the Year in 2013. In 2014 For King and Country issued their sophomore album “Run Wild. Live Free. Love Strong”. Like its predecessor the record earned a host of rave reviews, however far outperformed the band’s debut in the charts. Peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Billboard Christian Albums Chart, the record's success was aided by returning producer Ben Glover. The album spawned the singles “Fix My Eyes” and “Shoulders” and later won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. The band also won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for their contribution to the Lacrae track “Messengers” taken from his album “Anomaly”.

  • for KING + COUNTRY

There’s something so unique about seeing For King & Country perform live. Whether it’s the ease between brothers Joel and Luke, or the pairs’ perfectly entwined lyrics and melodies which dance double-helix-like, seeing For King & Country live on stage is like coming home after a long and tiring day. The vibe at their concerts is energising yet soothing, fresh yet familiar. As soon as the duo start to perform you know that you’re not meant to be anywhere else. Brothers to Christian music singer Rebecca St. James and sons to a music-promoting father, Joel and Luke were destined to find themselves in the thick of the music industry at some point. Just as their chosen name is reflective of their belief in something wider than themselves, their alt-rock music reflects an interest in something wider than traditional Christian pop music. Their lyrics are upbeat and fresh, yet emotionally deep. The boy’s Australian-American upbringing is perfectly reflected in their trans-Pacific sound. Seeing the brothers perform hits such as ‘Busted Heart (Hold On To Me)’ and ‘The Proof of Your Love’ is just amazing. Being a part of the crowd singing along in unison to ‘Middle of Your Heart’ when the boys performed in Nashville is something I will never ever forget. The energy they give off is insane. Seeing them live is a must, trust me!

  • Australian-American brother duo Joel David Smallbone and Luke James Smallbone better known onstage as For King and Country have achieved a large amount in their short career. Merging the genres of worship, pop and rock in a truly anthemic manner, their music can be universally enjoyed whether you follow christianity or not and the charismatic brothers ensure the audience know this throughout the performance.

The likes of Billboard have praised them as America's answer to Coldplay and as you watch the two musicians moving around the stage in an upbeat manner to their pop/rock sounds it seems to be a fair comparison. They may not have the back catalogue but they are well on the way with two hit albums so far and a handful of singles. They also have a following that has proven to be devoted and dedicated who come out to see the pair perform again and again. They seem to be having a fantastic time on the road and never tire of energy as they sing out the final choruses to 'Proof Of Love' whilst the crowds cheer on ecstatically below the stage whilst the two musicians make sure their enthusiasm is very much appreciated by all the performers onstage.

  • It was a great evening! Thank you very much! Thank you for bringing us closer to God's heart with your music! Thanks also for your personal testimonies and what you experience with God! I have a few difficult years behind me. And your music has helped me to go through this time! I nearly lost my child through illness, two dear people died from a traffic accident and my marriage is almost broken. But God has carried me through and your songs have often given me new courage and hope. God bless you and your service! there is still much to say about what God has done in my life. I just wanted to thank you from the heart that you are a blessing for so many people with your songs and your life with God and you are a great role model for many people! I'm glad if I have the chance to visit your concerts again!

    Many greetings from Germany!

  • I had seat 106 J 1,2,3,4...side view close to stage. I enjoyed show..my only complaint s are...the performers didn't turn toward the side audience enough. They played forward 90 percent of the time, even when walking around. The acoustics got off for the last 3 to 4 songs of the show too.while I admire the compassion international, their name is for king and country and a lot of American children are living in poverty too. Overall they are professional performers who put on a decent show..but if they are going to start a 1/2 late at least tell the audience why and when sharing the story about courtney... maybe say why she was taking the pills and the name of the medicine. ... I enjoy the sound of the band and will see them at unity in 2020..God Bless.

  • For Kind and Country was excellent Nov 7th in Madison!!! The music, the lights, the new look of a ship...them coming down on the sails from way up high in the sky singing Amen was a stunner! Cannot tell you how much I anticipated them coming to Madison and was excited beyond excited to see them and hear them. I enjoyed that each band member came to the point of the stage bringing their instruments and being introduced & playing songs, that was unexpected and I appreciated that so much. I was six chairs away from that point of the front of the ship and saw everyone & thing up close... a highlight of my life to be there that night!!! What a special group of people, and their music is great! God has blessed us all so much!!!

  • From start to finish, this show was amazing. This is the fourth time we have seen For King and Country in concert and this, by far, was the best. First, we did not have to travel to Florida; Next, parking was easy; And, the stage was perfect for the venue at the Savannah Civic Center. I think if the stage would have permitted, they would have been better suited in the Johnny Mercer Theatre as opposed to the Martin Luther King Jr Arena.

The lights and video screens helped enhance the show and having the guys come into the audience is always fun. Love their Stage B performance too.

Over all, an amazing show, best we have seen from them yet. Hope to see them again soon. Thanks Mates!

  • Chicago concert : they are theatrical performers— very high energy and lots of fog and lights! They may have sung all the songs from Burn The Ships album but didnt sing “O God Forgive Us” & a couple others I loved of theirs but didn't hear. Concert built in anticipation as the doors opened around 715 (15 min late) before we could walk into the building, but concert also was close to 40 min late in starting. No prayers during concert either which I am used to having. This stage was well used as they were running back and forth and even came up thru the crowd... they must be so tired after their performances! Enjoyed the show!

  • My daughter and I attended the For King and Country last evening at the Santander Arena in Reading, PA. It was a fantastic, wonderfully performed concert we have ever attended! Joel and Luke's interaction and conversing with the audience, along with their beautiful music touched the hearts of all of us in attendance.

If you didn't have the opportunity to attend one of their concerts, please make it a point to do so! You will not be disappointed!

God bless For King and Country and all of their families.

  • While the music was great, not nearly enough. Only 4 dynamite songs from Zach Williams. Of the 3 hours spent at the show, less than 90 minutes of music between Zach and Fir King and Country. Both were fantastic. But spending 30-40 minutes for a break to go shop in the middle of the performance was a real buzz kill. So bad my guest left. I realize this is a common format for Christian concerts, but it takes away from a great event. Did not feel I got my money’s worth. Just sat around a lot waiting for some music.

  • A delightful experience and one I will not soon forget! I have seen YouTube videos of "For King and Country" and was captivated then, being there live was an amazing experience indeed! I listen on Pandora daily, so I knew all of the songs except the preview of the new song coming out in the next album. I can't wait for my copy to arrive! I loved the entire production but especially the opening with the sheet and silhouette, it was a nice touch to the already phenomenal artistry of this band!
