When I first read the e-mail, I assume it is a joke. “You are invited to join Kate Moss for lunch at The Ivy to celebrate the launch of the Kate Moss Accessories Collection,” it says, casual as you like. I’ve “joined” Kate before, watching from afar as she and her BFFs laugh and drink together, behind a velvet rope. For 20 years, Kate has kept journalists at arm’s length. Why would she have lunch with us now?

The obvious answer — that Carphone Warehouse is paying her truckloads of money to design some phone covers — doesn’t gel. Kate’s career is hardly on the wane: in the past 12 months she has been the face of Versace, Matchless, Rag & Bone, Vivienne Westwood, Stuart
