Disney Plus Series ‘The Mandalorian’ Has Completed Production

Disney’s streaming strategy is starting to come into sharper focus. According to a new report from The Information‘s Beejoli Shah, Disney’s highly-anticipated Star Wars series The Mandalorian has finished filming, and Marvel series based on Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Elizabeth Olsen’s The Scarlet Witch began production in recent weeks. All three shows are expected to be available to stream when Disney+ launches later this year, with the Marvel series “intended to be flagship programming for the new platform.”

According to The Information’s sources, the Loki and Scarlet Witch series (both of which are still untitled) will each run for six episodes. This is in line with earlier reports, which stated that the spin-offs will include six to eight episodes in their initial runs. Despite the shorter run time — particularly when compared to the 13- and 10-episode seasons of Marvel’s Netflix shows — Marvel Studio execs are concerned about “keeping the production schedule on track,” as the Loki and Scarlet Witch projects will need to be fully completed when Disney+ launches in late 2019 (Disney has yet to set an official launch date).

As such, Marvel Studios production vice president Nate Moore and other higher-ups have been closely overseeing the projects, even going so far as to sit in writers rooms “to ensure storylines remain faithful to the comic book and film universe and, more importantly, the writing process keeps moving.” In addition, Shah reports that having a Marvel exec in the room “can help keep storylines consistent with the larger narrative of the films” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Some of the showrunners put up their guard at first [at having a Marvel executive in the room], but now that they’ve seen… that the room works faster, writers love it,” an exec directly involved with Marvel’s Disney+ programming told The Information.

Disney plans to demonstrate its streaming service for investors on April 11, so it’s likely that additional information about The Mandalorian — and maybe even some footage? — and the Loki and Scarlet Witch series will be available next week. Until then, rest easy knowing that you’ll only have to binge-watch six episodes of Marvel’s new series.
