With the work of female artists splashed across the set and L7 blaring on the speakers, Miuccia Prada delivered a riot grrrl vision for Spring 2018. The kinetic energy of the clothes was immediately evident, but how do you bring a personality-packed collection to life? The answer is to find new faces with charm, and this season, no one fit the bill better than Pasha Harulia, the Ukrainian rising star who wore the show’s second look. Stepping out right after her pal, Prada regular Kris Grikaite, Harulia caught the audience’s attention with her pixie cut and doll-like features. “I was so excited by the theme of this show,” says Harulia of her reaction to the graphic-novel-covered runway. “I’m kind of obsessed with comic books. . . . [Walking] was a great experience with a great team.”

Already a favorite of designers like Demna Gvasalia, who has tapped her for work with Balenciaga and Vetements, Harulia isn’t an overnight success story. She has traveled the world for work for the past two years, building connections and her book while learning exactly what it means to be a model. “At first I thought modeling was just a hobby for silly girls,” she says with a laugh. “That was the biggest mistake of my life! [Now] I’m happy to be a part of this magical industry—fashion is a flower garden of the most creative, beautiful, and talented people.” Here, she reveals her music obsessions, her wildest moments on set, and why her favorite model is her best friend.

On her wildest on-set experience

“Once I had a shoot in the desert. Naturally, it was really hard to get to the location—so we rented some huge camels! And it was hilarious how the producer of the shoot tried to put some stuff on one of the camels. We spent about two hours to carry all the equipment and clothes on these furry guys.”

On educating herself

“I’m really interested in activism within the feminist movement. Now I’m just learning all the theory and the history of feminism and [those] topical issues.”

On her pop culture obsessions

“I’m obsessed with a team games like baseball! When I have time, I’m always practicing. Or just watching the games on TV. I [also] adore anime culture, Stephen King books, and my PS4! [Right now] I really love Dua Lipa’s new album—you must have it in your playlist! Plus Oh Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, and Radiohead.”

On Ukrainian pride

“I’m from Ukraine! It’s one of the biggest countries in Europe, and people there have the warmest hearts. It’s really hard to describe how proud I am to be from there.”

On working with friends

“A couple days ago I was in Germany doing a cool editorial with my closest friend, Elizaveta Porodina, who is a photographer. She’s always making me laugh my ass off! My favorite model is my bestie, Sonya—she’s always working super-hard, and I’m proud of her!”

On her future, in and out of fashion

“The most important life question is what kind of person you should be. I really want to do something special in this world. It’s not enough to be just a beautiful picture. I hope one day I’ll figure out what exactly I want to do aside from modeling.”
