The château of Ainay-le-Vieil, is a historical monument along the tourist route, "la Route Jacques Coeur", in the village of Ainay le Vieil. It has remained under the ownership of the same family since 1467 when it was purchased by Charles de Chevenon de Bigny.

We had Fanny for the guided visit and she was outstanding.
Never visited a castle (and we did a lot in the last years) where the guide was so enthousiast. She told a whole story about any detail, any question, always with a little joke. Fascinating !!!

Little known and off the tourist track, the chateau at Ainay, just south of St Amand, is well worth a couple of hours or your time. It remains a perfectly-preserved fortress-chateau, ie the outer walls are circular, and the guided tour (no DIY tour inside) takes you up the towers and round the battlements before coming into the furnished part of the building.
The visit lasts 80-90 minutes and they only happen at certain times - check the website for details.
After (or before) the visit you can wander round outside the walls and also through the extensive gardens. If you have time, make sure you get to the Chartreuses gardens (signposted). There is a picnic area but no cafe or tea-room.

This superbly presented castle in a charming village is a must see for visitors to the region. The guided tour was provided in French on the day we visited, but a very well-written and informative written guide is available in English. The tour takes just over an hour and covers the entire castle and contents, including items from Napoleon and Marie Antoinette. A small creperie serving light meals is open in the castle grounds during the warmer months (closed Monday-Wednesday).

Chateau d'Ainay-le-Vieil is one of the castles located in Loire Region, in the center of France. It is a well-preserved castle, which was built in the 14th Century, so it is a typical castle of the Middle Ages. It is possible to visit the bridge, the inner part of the castle and the gardens. So, it is a very interesting visit for adults (learn about history, see rooms, etc.) and for children (walk, play, run in the gardens). Very good place for all the family.

This is a gem of a small chateau with a fascinating history. Not overcrowded and has been in the same family for over 400 years. The owners still live and breath life into Ainay le Vieil.
The gardens are beautiful and the architectural evolution of the building shows how form and function evolve over time.
A definite highlight of the Route Jacques Coeur and absolutely for those who enjoy the road less traveled

Arrived just before 12 and found a pleasant young lady at the kiosk who kindly said we could take our dog in with us on a lead, we have found many French Chateaux do not allow this so a good start. My husband has walking difficulties so needs to rest frequently we found plenty of seating all round the beautiful gardens. August isn't really a good month in the garden end of summer displays and autumn colour not yet upon us but I found plenty of interest still some lovely scented roses, well clipped topiary and lovely water lily. The only thing that upset me was the sight of some Japanese Knotweed in one of the waterways. I do hope they deal with it quickly as I've seen the devastation it causes.
We enjoyed a light lunch served by a very pleasant young lady who assisted me with my poor French. We did not go in the castle that looked amazing due to having the dog but I'm sure it would be wonderful. A lovely day out.
