Cydonia oblonga 'Vranja' - Kweepeer, Quince
.
Common name: Kweepeer, Quince
Family: Rosaceae (Rose family)
Life form: Tree
Comments: Medieval Plants Tour - The quince originates from Western Asia, but also thrives happily in more moderate climates. The medieval Dutch name for the quince tree, ‘quedeboem’, reminds us of the plant’s oriental origins: ‘quede’ is derived from name of the Greek city Kydonia on Crete, where the quince was widely cultivated. In medieval images the Christ Child is sometimes portrayed holding a quince: the fruit is a symbol of the sins of mankind and refers to Christ’s role as the saviour from these sins. A medieval herbal states: “The quince is both cold and dry, and the fat, ripe fruits are particularly good to eat. They lead to cheerfulness and also help induce urination. They also help relieve diarrhoea and ease menstruation. The fruit can, however, upset your insides. If this happens, you must eat sweet dates. Quince can also be used to make cider.”
