Nigerians  are  going  to  the  p o l l s n e x t y e a r w i t h o u t  s e c u r i t y i n t h e c o u n t r y .  H o w p o s s i b l e i s t h a t ? T h e  troubling  situation  is  that  there  are  many  bright  Nigerians  around  the  w o r l d d o i n g  w o n d e r f u l l y  w e l l , b u t  stupidity  reigns  supreme  on  its  c o r r i d o r s o f  p o w e r . I n  N i g e r i a , y o u  w i l l s e e  a c a d e m i c s ,  i n v e n t o r s a n d  experts  ar guing  like  nonentities  o n b e h a l f o f  i d i o c y t h a t i s  p a r t l y a n  ideology  in  its  current  leadership.  I n o v e r s e a s , m a n y m a r v e l a t  people  from  Nigeria,  but  quickly  feel  unease  when  they  see  those  at  the  help  of  affairs.  Even  though  t h e r e ' s a l e a d e r s h i p i s s u e , t h e  arrangement  of  dynamic  cultures  will  always  pose  a  problem.  Due  to  t h e m a r r i a g e o f t h e s e s t r a n g e  b e d f e l l o w s , t h e r e ' s m i s p l a c e d  priorities  especially  among  those  on  the  leadership  corridor

M a n y p a r t s o f t h e c o u n t r y a r e  insecure  as  kidnapping  becomes  very  lucrative.  Elites  who  are  easy  t a r g e t s f o r r a n s o m n o w a v o i d  roads  in  long  travels  for  safety .

n  19th  September  1996,  during

O the  regime  of  late  General  Sani  Abacha's,  in  the  city  of  Owerri  –  Imo  State,  an  innocent  1 1­year ­old  boy  named  Anthony  Ikechukwu  Okoronkwo  was  murdered  for  Ritual  purposes.

T h e l i t t l e b o y w a s h a w k i n g b o i l e d  groundnuts,  which  was  his  daily  routine.  He  strolled  along,  selling  his  groundnuts  for  peanuts  to  whoever  wanted  to  buy .

When  he  got  to  Amakohia  area  of  Owerri,  his  eyes  lit  up  with  joy  when  a  customer  b e c k o n e d o n h i m t o a p p r o a c h T h a t  ' c u s t o m e r ' w a s n a m e d I n n o c e n t  Ekeanyanwu,  aged  32.

T h e b o y w a s c a l l e d i n t o t h e f a m o u s  Otokoto  Hotel  and  the  little  groundnut  seller  was  visibly  very  excited  since  it  was  a  hotel,  it  meant  that  the  new  'customer'  w o u l d p r o b a b l y b e b u y i n g p l e n t y  groundnuts which will mean more money  to  take  home  to  make  his  parents  happy  and  assist  his  struggling  family .

While  waiting,  the  boy  was  treated  like  a  guest, he was given a bottle of Coca­Cola  to  cool  off  from  the  punishing  heat  of  tropical  Africa.

Innocently ,  he  took  the  Coke  and  gulped  it  with  relish.

As  he  was  sipping  his  soft  drink  and  taking  a  look  at  the  glittering  surrounding  of  the  hotel,  he  could  have  imagined  having  a  hotel  of  his  own  too  later  in  the  future.  As  he  was  dreaming,  his  vision  became  blurry  a n d t h e s o u n d s a r o u n d h i m b e c a m e  muzzled  and  dull.

In  a  matter  of  minutes,  he  dozed  off,  never  t o w a k e u p a g a i n . H i s t r a y f u l l o f  groundnuts  was  lying  in  a  corner

Observing  the  boy  from  a  safe  distance  was  the  man  who  had  called  him  to  buy  his  groundnuts. He had spiked the boy's drink  and  once  he  saw  he  was  asleep,  he  took  the

polythene  bag  and  buried  his  remains.

The  Butcher ,  Ekeanyanwu  then  took  the  polythene  bag  containing  the  boy's  head  and  headed  for  the  next  destination:  to  the  house  of  the  man  who  needed  the  fresh  head.  The  man  who  is  behind  it  all.

HOW DID  THE  INFORMA TION  LEAK  OUT :

A f t e r t h e g r i s l y m u r d e r o f t h e l i t t l e  Okoronkwo  by  Mr  Innocent  Ekeanyanwu  (what  a  name,  innocent  indeed),  he  left  the  hotel  to  deliver  the  head  where  it  was  n e e d e d H e t h e n S t o p p e d a B i k e m a n  (Okada  rider)  to  convey  him  to  the  place. It  was  the  Okada  man  named  Opara,  whom  he  stopped  to  take  him  to  his  destination  in  Eziama  that  realized  that  was  his  passenger  was carrying inside a polythene bag was a  fresh  human  head.  It  was  still  dripping  with  blood.  When  he  alighted,the  Okada  man  quickly  alerted  the  police.  The  Police  then  intercepted  Ekeanyanwu  on  his  way  back  in  a  Peugeot  504  car ,  he  was  carrying  the  head  with  him  in  the  polythene  bag.

A sharp  cutlass  emer ged  from  nowhere  and  the boy's head was severed from his body He  was  beheaded  in  a  matter  of  minutes.

A f t e r t h e b o y ' s h e a d w a s c u t o ff , h e  disembowelled  his  torso,  removed  his  liver  and  other  parts  he  needed.  Not  done  yet,  the  boy's  genitals  were  not  spared  as  well.

After  butchering  the  boy ,  and  sorting  out  the  or gans,  he  packed  his  head  inside  a

So  Ekeanyanwu  had  no  other  option  but  to  return  to  Owerri  with  the  boy's  head.

When  it  was  time  to  take  the  headless  body  of  Ikechukwu  to  the  local  mortuary ,  there  was  a  massive  procession  and  protested  by  Owerri  people.

People  came  out  in  1000s  to  protest  the  boys  ritual  killing.  They  stayed  around  and  within  the  hotel  premises,  waited  for  the  police  to  confirm  that  it  was  indeed  a  ritual

murder  while  more  were  matching  and  trooping  to  the  scene  of  the  Ritual  Murder  as  the  news  was  spreading.

It  was  in  the  midst  of  this  tension  that  the  l o c a l m e d i a s t a t i o n m a d e i t s  miscalculation.  They  showed  the  image  of  Innocent  Ekeanyanwu  holding  the  head  of  his  victim.

The  goal  of  the  media  was  to  assure  the  people,  assuage  public  fear ,  ask  the  public  to  help  identify  the  boy  and  show  official  transparency  but  what  followed  next  was  a  catastrophe.  All  hell  broke  loose  as  the  enraged  people  of  Owerri  went  haywire  after  the  image  was  the  first  broadcast  on  the  24th  of  September

r e s i d e n t s  abandoned  their  b u s i n e s s e s a n d  c o n g r e g a t e d a t  t h e t o w n ' s  c e n t r a l  m a r k e t p l a c e I t  w a s t h e r e t h e y  d e c i d e d o n t h e  n e x t p l a n o f  a c t i o n a n d  o u t l i n e d t h e i r  strategies  to  deal  with  the  Otokoto  'headhunters'.

The  news  spread  r a p i d l y , e v e r y  home  in  Owerri  had  heard  the  news  or  seen  the  image  of  Okoronkwo's  head  or  his  shallow  grave.

Unemployed  and  disgruntled  youths  took  over  the  parks  and  issued  threats  to  the  Owerri  millionaires.

From  the  Owerri  main  market,  the  riots  e x p l o d e d a n d s p r e a d . T h e p a t t e r n o f  destruction  was  neat.

The  rampaging  crowd  first  went  to  the  mor gue  and  from  there,  they  rushed  to  the  Otokoto  Hotel  and  burnt  it  to  the  ground.  F r o m t h e r e , t h e y w e n t t o t h e n e a r b y  palatial  mansion  of  Chief  V incent  Duru  and  destroyed  his  property ,  his  expensive  c a r s w e r e w r e c k e d a n d D u r u h i m s e l f  narrowly  escaped.

From  there,  the  crowd  split  into  attack  groups  and  spread  out  to  other  sites  of  the  privileged  elite  and  unleashed  maximum

destruction.

The  well­known  Piano  Plaza  and  Stores,  alongside  another  hotel,  Chibet  Hotel,  and  various  businesses  linked  to  the  Otokoto  and  their  associates  were  utterly  destroyed.

T h e Z u b a i r u l e d g o v e r n m e n t l a t e r  c o n fi s c a t e d a l l t h e p r o p e r t i e s a s  r e c o m m e n d e d b y t h e p a n e l w h i c h w a s  headed  by  Justice  PC  Onumajuru.

From  there,  they  rushed  to  the  palace  of  the  traditional  ruler  and  chairman  of  the  state  c o u n c i l o f t r a d i t i o n a l r u l e r s , E z e O n u

E g w u N w o k e ( l a t e r i n d i c t e d a l o n g s i d e  Aneke  and  Abure  by  the  panel  of  inquiry)  and  burnt  down  his  residence  and  his  petrol

At  the  time  of  its  existence,  Otokoto  Hotel  was  located  in  an  upscale  area  of  Owerri,  specifically  the  Amakohia  side,  and  it  was  a  favourite location for the rich and wealthy  youths  to  meet,  drink  and  have  all  manners  of  fun.

It  was  owned  by  Chief  V incent  Duru,  the  father  of  Obidiozor  Duru,  the  leader  of  the  B l a c k S c o r p i o n s s e c r e t c u l t t h a t w a s  responsible  for  robberies  and  kidnapping  of  children  in  the  state.

BACKGROUND  T O  THE  ST OR Y

station.  They  also  destroyed  the  king's  15  air  conditioners  and  many  of  his  cars.

They  were  not  done  yet.  From  there,  the  crowd  'troops'  headed  for  the  residences  of  former  Imo  State  officials.

T h e s e a d m i n i s t r a t o r s w e r e t a r g e t e d  because  of  what  was  described  as  'their  alleged  unwillingness  to  properly  tackle  several  cases  of  ritual  murder ,  kidnapping  and  robbery  while  in  office.'  The  angry  rioters  only  agreed  to  calm  down  when  the  military  administrator  (MILAD),  assured  them  that  a  full,  state­level  investigation  of  the  incident  was  going  to  be  launched.

Ekeanyanwu,  who  murdered  the  boy ,  was  aged  32  and  he  worked  as  a  gardener  inside  the  Otokoto  Hotel.

B e f o r e t h i s  h o r r i b l e  i n c i d e n t , t h e  p e o p l e o f  O w e r r i w e r e  a l r e a d y v e r y  m a d a t t h e  bizarre  actions  of  some  loud,  e x t r e m e l y  p o w e r f u l a n d  o b s c e n e l y  w e a l t h y  i n d i v i d u a l s i n  the  state.  These  p e o p l e w e r e  h i g h l y connected  and  o p p r e s s e d  e v e r y o n e  w h e r e t h e y  went.

Rumours  were  all  over  the  place  as  to  their  very  dark  dealings  and  even  the  possibility  of  ritual  murders  and  killings  but  no  one  r e a l l y h a d a n y h a r d e v i d e n c e y e t o r  probably  those  who  had  it  were  too  jittery  to  say  anything.

Whatever  the  case,  these  rich  people  who  had  no  real  tangible  or  easily  traceable  sources  of  wealth  kept  on  living  lar ge  and  instilling  an  atmosphere  of  terror  and  fear  on  the  Owerri  populace.

This  was  how  Owerri  was  described  at  that  time: When  the  people  heard  of  what  happened  inside  the  hotel  to  the  boy ,  Owerri  exploded  with  anger  and  resentment  that  had  been  piling  up  for  years.  For  two  straight  days,  the  people  of  Owerri  trooped  out  in  their  thousands,  protesting  and  rioting.

Not  even  the  strong­arm  tactics  of  the  Imo  S t a t e m i l i t a r y a d m i n i s t r a t o r, C o l o n e l  T a n k o Z u b a i r u , c o u l d s t o p t h e m ( t h e  a d m i n i s t r a t i o n o f t h e f o r m e r m i l i t a r y  governor Navy Captain James  Aneke was  already  seen  as  corrupt,  419­based  and  even  complicit  in  the  protection  of  the  Otokoto  men.

They  simply  ran  amok  and  the  national  and  international  media  focused  on  the  Owerri  riots  of  24th  and  25th  of  September ,  1996,  a l s o k n o w n a s t h e O t o k o t o r i o t s . T h e  people  felt  they  had  had  more  than  enough.

Any  property  suspected  to  belong  to  the  'Otokoto  men'  were  set  ablaze,  from  posh  hotels  to  luxury  supermarkets,  their  flashy  a u t o m o b i l e s , p a l a t i a l m a n s i o n s ,  everything  was  destroyed  and  burnt  to  the  g r o u n d A n y s u s p e c t e d m e m b e r o f t h e  Otokoto  gang  was  lynched.

Prior  to  the  riots,  the  youthful  members  of  the  Otokoto  gang  &  other  secret  societies  (believed  to  be  offshoots  of  campus  secret  c u l t s ) i n v o l v e d i n r i t u a l k i l l i n g s w e n t  everywhere  oppressing  others  with  their  i l l g o t t e n w e a l t h a n d m a k i n g o t h e r  hardworking  youths  look  clueless  &  silly .

The  Owerri  public  had  no  faith  in  the  p o l i c e a n d a s a m a t t e r o f f a c t , t h e  commissioner  of  police  at  that  time,  David  Abure,  was  seen  as  the  personification  of  corruption  who  wined  and  dined  with  the  evil  ones.

THE  INVESTIGA TION

Following  the  arrest  of  Ekeanyanwu,  he  was  remanded  in  police  custody  while  awaiting  trial.  But  while  he  was  in  the  police  custody ,  magic  happened!  He  was  killed  by  food  poisoning  4days  after .

He  killed  the  boy  on  Thursday  and  by  Sunday  morning,  he  was  found  Dead.  But  luckily  for  the  interrogators,  before  he  was  k i l l e d , E k e a n y a n w u c o n f e s s e d a n d  mentioned  Leonard  Unaogu  as  the  brain  behind  the  ritual  killing  syndicate.

He  confessed  that  the  ritual  killing  ring  w a s a w e l l o r g a n i z e d m a c h i n e t h a t  specialized  in  the  harvesting  of  human  b o d y p a r t s a n d s o l d t h e m t o t h o s e  interested in using them for rituals and all  the  usual  nonsense  they  claimed  to  be  using  them  for .  He  also  said  it  was  Unaogu  who  ordered  him  to  get  a  human  head.

Reports  have  it  that  the  Otokoto  saga  had  been  in  place  as  far  back  as  1976.

Confessional  statements  revealed  that  no  o n e w a s s p a r e d a t t h e O t o k o t o H o t e l .

I n n o c e n t g u e s t s a n d u n s u s p e c t i n g  travellers  who  lodged  at  the  hotel  were  drugged  or  attacked  in  the  middle  of  their  sleep  and  hacked  to  death  after  which  they  were  cut  into  pieces  for  sale.

Police  officers  who  swooped  upon  the  hotel  d i s c o v e r e d n o t o n l y t h e s h a l l o w g r a v e  containing  that  of  the  little  boy  but  also  graves  containing  other  victims  with  their  decomposing  and  dismembered  corpses. N o o n e k n o w s t h e e x a c t e x h u m e d a t  Otokoto  Hotel  was  up  to  24  bodies.  Some  w e r e b u r i e d a t i n c o n s p i c u o u s l o c a t i o n s  such  as  under  the  flowerbeds.  Such  evil,  such  horror!

T h e m a n t h a t E k e a n y a n w u m e n t i o n e d  before  he  was  poisoned  to  death,  Leonard  Unaogu,  was  a  business  tycoon.  And  he  was  the  junior  brother  to  Laz  Unaogu,  a  serving  minister  under  Abacha. Leonard  Unaogu  was  eventually  arrested  by  the  police.

When  the  police  arrested  Unaogu,  he  lied  with  a  straight  face  that  he  never  knew  anyone  called  Innocent  Ekeanyanwu  and  that  he  was  not  even  in  Owerri  when  the  crime  was  committed,  saying  he  was  in  Lagos.

THE  TRIAL AND  JUDGEMENT :

The  trial  started  on  the  9th  of  December ,  1996,  with  Hillary  Ngozi  Opara  as  the  first  prosecution  witness.

Nine  people  testified  before  Justice  S.O  Ekpe,  who  took  over  from  Justice  Gabriel  Ojiako,  the  retired  chief  judge  of  Imo  State,  during  the  trial.  The  court  also  admitted  the  c o n f e s s i o n a l s t a t e m e n t o f I n n o c e n t  Ekeanyanwu.

Mar garet  Acholonu,  a  receptionist  at  the  hotel,  stated  that  two  spots  were  dug  at  the  hotel  premises  and  it  was  from  the  second  o n e t h a t t h e b o d y o f O k o r o n k w o w a s  exhumed.  She  also  implicated  Chief  Duru.

She  also  said  that  on  that  fateful  day ,  she  saw  Ekeanyanwu  with  a  black  bag  and  he  told  her  he  was  going  to  his  village  at  Eziama

A ser geant,  Sunday  Onwucheka,  told  the  c o u r t h e w a s i n t h e o ffi c e w h e n

Ek ean y an w u w as ar r es ted w ith a  f r es h  human  head  of  the  innocent  boy A c c o r d i n g t o O n w u c h e k a , b e f o r e t h e  police  took  Ekeanyanwu  to  Otokoto  Hotel,  the  crime  scene,  he  confessed  to  killing  the  boy  at  Mba  River  in  Ikeduru  and  dumped  t h e b o d y i n s i d e t h e r i v e r T h e p o l i c e  followed  the  false  trail  but  found  nothing  at  the  Mba  River

S o a t a b o u t 7 : 0 0 p m o n t h e 2 0 t h o f  September ,  they  returned  to  Owerri.  The  following  Monday ,  they  continued  with  their  investigation  and  took  him  to  Otokoto  Hotel  where  the  headless  body  of  the  boy  h a d a l r e a d y b e e n i d e n t i fi e d b e f o r e t h e  police  team  arrived.

On  20th  August  1997,  a  senior  magistrate  court  in  Owerri  docked  9  police  officers.

For  the  murder  of  Ekeanyanwu.

They  were:

Ifeanyi  Anozie, an assistant commissioner  of  police

Chukwu  Obasi,  an  assistant  superintendent  of  police

Kevin  Ezirim

Christian  Nnazi

Clifford  Odiaka

Felix  Nnorom

Christopher  Aguobi

Ignatius  Igwe

James  Ibezere

Josephat  Nwosu

The  case  snailed  on  till  14th  October  1997,  o v e r a y e a r , a n d a f t e r s e r i e s o f  a d j o u r n m e n t s , a b s e n c e o f l a w y e r s , t h e  P r e s i d i n g j u d g e , s u s p e c t s o r e v e n t h e  retirement  of  judges  or  their  transfer  etc.

When  the  case  finally  resumed,  many  were  pissed  off.  Leonard  Unaogu,  the  minister's  brother ,  was  transported  in  a  new  station  wagon  from  the  prison  to  the  court  like  a  royalty V incent  Duru  and  other  suspects

were  brought  in  a  Black  Maria  from  prison  to  the  court,  with  handcuffs.

Duru  protested  the  preferential  treatment  given  to  Unaogu.

Many  judges  handled  the  case.  First,  it  was  Gabriel  Ojiaku,  then  Simeon  Ekpe  who  was  almost  done  with  the  prosecution  until  he  was  elevated  to  Court  of  Appeal.

Then  finally  on  28th  April  1999,  Justice  Chioma  Nwosu­Iheme.

Chief  V incent  Duru.  The  owner  of  t h e O t o k o t o H o t e l a n d U n a o g u  d e n i e d k n o w i n g e a c h o t h e r , b u t  Justice  Nwosu­Iheme  said  that  was  a  lie.

He  appealed  the  sentence  in  2012  but  he  was  unlucky  as  the  sentence  was  upheld  by  the  Appeal  Court

Leonard  Unaogu:  He  would  later  d i e s o m e y e a r s a g o a t t h e P o r t  Harcourt  Prisons  in  what  has  been  d e s c r i b e d a s v e r y m y s t e r i o u s  circumstances.

BLACK  SCORPION  SECRETE  CUL T :

After judgment, the convicts all moved to  the  Port  Harcourt  Prisons  in  the  middle  of  February  2003  pending  their  execution.

Prior  to  the  case  of  Okoronkwo,  several  children  had  disappeared  in  Owerri,  never  to  be  found  to  date.  Some  were  kidnapped  a n d t h e i r w e a l t h y p a r e n t s w i l l p a y a  ransom.

It  was  so  serious  that  in  May  1995,  the  daughter  of  Dr  Okoh,  a  Physician  in  the  c i t y w a s k i d n a p p e d b y t h e B l a c k  Scorpions,  one  of  the  elite  secret  cult,  asked  the  doctor  to  pay  $12000  before  the  girl  W ill  be  released.

Eventually ,  the  police  stormed  the  hideout  of  the  Black  Scorpions  and  months  later ,  the  leader  of  the  cult,  Obidiozor  Duru  (who  happens  to  also  be  the  son  of  Chief  V i n c e n t D u r u , o w n e r o f t h e O t o k o t o  Hotel)  and  Amanze  Onuoha,  were  both  arrested.

They  were  brought  before  the  Imo  State

R o b b e r y a n d F i r e a r m s T r i b u n a l o n t h e  char ges  of  armed  robbery ,  a  capital  offence.

B u s i n e s s m a n a n d p o l i t i c i a n E m m a n u e l  Iwuanyanwu  were  also  mentioned  in  the  saga  but  he  denied  ever  knowing  anything  about  the  case. What  happened  next  was  nothing  but  a  mockery  of  justice.  Duru  and  Onuoha  were

H i s e x e c u t i o n t o o k p l a c e o n S u n d a y ,  November  13,  2016.  This  was  13  years  after  his  2003  conviction.  This  was  after  the  government  approved  the  execution  warrant.

For  His  Properties:

During  the  administration  of  Ikedi  Ohakim  as governor , he tried to revoke the right of  occupancy  of  the  police  to  the  confiscated  Otokoto  properties  but  people  were  said  to  have  kicked  against  it.

The  Duru  family  was  also  said  to  have  approached  Governor  Rochas  Okorocha  over  the  confiscated  property  saying  the  property  belonged  to  the  Otokoto  Group  and  not  Duru.  Okorocha  stylishly  brushed  the  matter  aside.

E a c h t i m e t h e i s s u e o f r e t u r n i n g t h e  confiscated  property  to  the  Otokoto  family ,  Owerri  people  rise  and  protests.

CONCLUSION:

T h e y g o t t h e m o s t l i b e r a l v i s i t i n g  privileges,  ate  food  cooked  and  brought  from  their  homes.  They  were  like  lords  and  Duru  (a  PhD  holder  in  psychology  from  C a l i f o r n i a S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y ) e v e n  impregnated  one  of  his  female  Jailers  and  did  a  'traditional  wedding'  with  her  before  he  completed  his  case.

And  while  they  were  incarcerated,  the  rate  o f c h i l d k i d n a p p i n g s i n I m o d r o p p e d  drastically .

In  1997,  six  people  were  executed  by  a  fi r i n g s q u a d f o l l o w i n g a j u d g e m e n t b y  Justice  Emmanuel  Nnodim.  One  of  those  killed  was  Obidiozor ,  the  son  of  Chief  V incent  Duru,  leader  of  Black  Scorpion  Cult.

Nigeria is still in the grips of ritual killers,  almost  two  decades  after  the  Otokoto  saga.  The  same  factors  that  gave  birth  to  the  1996  Otokoto  ritual  killings  are  still  in  place  t o d a y : p o v e r t y , i r r a t i o n a l b e l i e f s i n  supernatural  powers  that  lead  people  to  believe  money  can  be  made  from  flesh  without  doing  any  work,  weak/corrupt  law  enforcement  agencies  and  a  super ­slow  judicial  system.

The  presence  of  these  factors  explains  why  after  bloody  Otokoto  saga,  the  country  still  had  to  face  the  Okija/Ogwugwu  shrine  saga  in  Anambra  State  and  the  Soka  forest  horror  of  Oyo  State.

The  Nigerian  disease  is  still  there  –  yet  to  be  healed.

In  Anambra  State,  the  soldiers  of  the  302  Artillery  Regiment/General  Support  of  the

and  deaths  in  captivity ,  but  little  or  nothing  is  publicly  known  about  their  operational  c o d e s i n c l u d i n g c h e c k s a n d b a l a n c e s t h e r e b y r a i s i n g s t r o n g f e a r s o f b e i n g  “licensed  to  kill  or  maim  or  destroy  at  will”.  Fears  are  ripe  that  the  State  m a y d e s c e n d b a c k t o t h e  inglorious  epoch  of  Bakassi  Boys  (1998­2002). In Benue State, the  N i g e r i a n s e c u r i t y f o r c e s  p r o t e c t e d J i h a d i s t F u l a n i  Herdsmen  have  continued  their  m a s s a c r e s p r e e t a r g e t e d a t  defenseless  civilians  in  the  past  two  months  of  July  and  August  2022.

Nigerian  Army , Onitsha and the personnel  of  Ogbaru  Naval  Base  and  the  Nigeria  Police  Force  as  well  as  operatives  of  the  A n a m b r a V i g i l a n t e S e r v i c e a r e t h o s e  involved  in  rising  cases  of  killings  and  h o u s e b u r n i n g s a c r o s s t h e S t a t e . T h e  A n a m b r a V i g i l a n t e S e r v i c e o p e r a t i v e s  f u n d e d b y t h e p r e s e n t G o v e r n m e n t o f  Anambra  State  were  recently  reor ganized  and kitted with total face cover masks and  offensive  weapons.  They  are  joined  by  hundreds  of  ex­militants  recruited  from  Bayelsa  State  and  other  parts  of  the  Niger  Delta  Region.  Although  tasked  to  go  after  'Unknown  Gunmen'  holding  the  State  to  r a n s o m i n r e c e n t m o n t h s i n c l u d i n g  abductions,  forceful  payment  of  ransoms

S e v e r a l fi n d i n g s b y I n t e r s o c i e t y h a v e  continued  to  indicate  the  fact  that  the  near  t o t a l t a k e o v e r o f c o m b a t a n t c a d r e a n d  s e n i o r c o m m a n d i n g p o s i t i o n s i n t h e  Nigerian  Military  particularly  the  Army  by  northern  Muslims  in  Eastern  Nigeria  will  c o n t i n u e t o r i d i c u l e t h e n e u t r a l i t y a n d  p r o f e s s i o n a l i s m c l a i m s b y t h e H i g h  Commands  of  the  country's  Military  and  reduce  their  operations  to  nothing  more  than  'ethnic  and  religious  witch­hunting,  profiling  and  persecution'.  T otality  of  the  above has been the case in the South­East  and  the  South­South  since  2016  and  has  also  destroyed  professionalism  in  what  r e m a i n s a s ' N i g e r i a n M i l i t a r y ' . T h e s e  explain  why  the  deployed  security  forces  h a v e b e e n g o i n g a b o u t w i t h r e c k l e s s  abandon,  hatefully  massacring  hundreds

I t i s m o s t l i k e l y c o r r e c t t o s a y t h a t  d e f e n s e l e s s c i v i l i a n s l o s t t h e i r l i v e s i n  hundreds  in  the  past  two  months  of  July  and  August  2022  and  several  dozens  of  civilian  homes  burnt  by  security  forces  and  allied militias in Imo and  Anambra States.  It  must  be  recalled  that  between  Oct  2020  and  June  2022,  a  period  of  20  months  in  Eastern  Nigeria,  according  to  our  recent  documentary  report,  1,360  civilians  were  killed,  150  communities  attacked,  1,450  h o u s e s b u r n t o r d e s t r o y e d a n d 5 1 , 0 0 0  p e r s o n s r e n d e r e d h o m e l e s s b y s e c u r i t y  forces.  The  number  is  most  likely  to  have  i n c r e a s e d t o 1 5 0 0  d e a t h s , 1 5 0 0 h o u s e s  b u r n t a n d 1 5 0 0  r e n d e r e d h o m e l e s s .  Properties  worth  over  N 5 7 b i l l i o n w e r e a l s o  lost  under  the  said  20  m o n t h s S i n c e t h e n  a n d i n t h e p a s t t w o  m o n t h s o f J u l y a n d  A u g u s t , I m o a n d  Anambra  States  have  accounted  for  no  fewer  than  140  more  security  k i l l i n g s D o z e n s o f  d e f e n s e l e s s c i t i z e n s  have  also  been  secretly  h a c k e d t o d e a t h b y  J i h a d i s t F u l a n i  Herdsmen  in  different  parts  of  Imo  and  Anambra  States.  Apart  from  killing  seven  defenseless  natives  of  Otulu  in  A womama  on  13th  July  2022  and  unspecified  number  of  A womama  natives,  there  have  been  several  reports  of  mass  k i l l i n g s b y s o l d i e r s a n d t h e i r a l l i e d  Ebubeagu  militias  across  the  State  since  then.

Army  Killed  Three  Block  Molders  At  EkeUtutu­Orsu­Ihiteukwa  And  Labeled  Them  “IPOB”

The  latest  of  such  killings  was  T uesday  3 0 t h A u g u s t k i l l i n g o f t w o b r i c k l a y e r s  (block  molders)  at  their  workplace  and  shooting  of  another  elderly  man  nearby  who  later  died.  The  killings  perpetrated  by  soldiers  of  the  Nigerian  Army  had  taken  place  at  Eke­Ututu  part  of  Orsu­Ihiteukwa

in  Orsu  Local  Government  of  Imo  State.   The  soldiers  had  stormed  the  area  and  o p e n e d fi r e , s h o o t i n g i n d i ff e r e n t  directions;  forcing  defenseless  citizens  to  run for their lives.  T wo  d e f e n s e l e s s c i t i z e n s  molding  blocks  at  their  w o r k p l a c e w e r e  g u n n e d d o w n w h i l e  another  elderly  man  of  over 70­Y ear ­Old, who  c o u l d n o t r u n , w a s  terminally  shot  at  his  t w o l e g s a n d l e f t t o  bleed  to  death.  He  was  reported  to  have  died  t h e r e a f t e r . T h e n a m e s  of  the  two  slain  victims  w e r e g i v e n a s  U g o c h u k w u O b i a n a l i  and  Chinonso  while  the  name  of  the  shot  elderly  man  who  was  reported  to  have  died  later  was  given  as  Pa  N i c h o l a s O n w u g h a l a N o t d o n e , t h e  s o l d i e r s i n v a d e d a C o m m u n i t y H e a l t h  C e n t e r i n n e i g h b o r i n g A m a l u l u a t l a t e  n i g h t o f 3 0 t h A u g u s t 2 0 2 2 , s h o t  sporadically ,  broke  the  doors  of  the  Heath  Center  and  arrested  scores  of  the  staff  crew  members  and  patients  on  admission.  The  soldiers  later  took  them  away  and  claimed  that  “they  got  an  intelligence  report  that  a  s u s p e c t e d I P O B m e m b e r ' s w i f e w a s  admitted  at  the  Health  Center  as  she  was  about  to  put  to  bed”.  A female  staff  spoken  to  said  they  were  later  released  in  the  early  hours  of  the  next  day  being  31st  August  2022.

One  of  the  most  recent  arsonist  attacks  on  Imo  Communities  by  security  forces  was  t h e b u r n i n g d o w n o f s e v e r a l c i v i l i a n   h o u s e s ; e i g h t e e n m a r k e t s t a l l s s t o c k e d  w i t h g o o d s a n d e i g h t p r i v a t e c a r s i n  U m u o k w u a n d U g b e l l e v i l l a g e s  (communities)  of  Izombe  in  Oguta  Local  G o v e r n m e n t A r e a o f I m o S t a t e . T h e  dastardly  act  was  perpetrated  by  soldiers  and  their  allied  Ebubeagu  militias  as  well  as  personnel  of  the  Nigeria  Police  Force.  This  followed  a  report  of  attack  at  a  local  police  station  in  the  area  by  armed  persons.  In  the  past  two  months  of  July  and  August  in  Anambra  State,  there  have  been  reports  of  mass  killing  of  unarmed  citizens  and  burning  down  of  homes  by  soldiers,  naval  p e r s o n n e l a n d f a c e c o v e r e d v i g i l a n t e s ,  j o i n e d b y r e c r u i t e d e x N i g e r D e l t a  militants.  The  affected  communities  had  included  Ogbaru,  Uli,  Ukpor ,  Nteje  and  so  on. The  killings  did  not  include  a  handful  of  violent  armed  persons  caught  in  the  act

or  in  their  hideouts  by  security  forces.  In

B e n u e S t a t e , J i h a d i s t F u l a n i H e r d s m e n  have  continued  to  massacre  members  of

the  defenseless  Christian  population  and  burn  down  or  destroy  their  properties.  The  victims  include  ancestral  Igbo  natives  of  Benue  State.  The  latest  of  the  butchery  was  1st  Sept  2022  Jihadist  Herdsmen  attack  in

Army ,  Police  And  Imo  Government  Have  C o n t i n u e d T o L i v e I n “ L a i v i r u s ”  Falsehood

M i l i t a r y p a r t i c u l a r l y t h e A r m y h a d  suffered  years  of  bastardization  starting  from  Civil  W ar ,  pos t  civil  w ar  and  military  eras,  but  its  c u r r e n t  b a s t a r d i z a t i o n s i n c e  July  2015  is  heading  t o t h e m a d d e n i n g  p o i n t o f  i r r e v e r s i b i l i t y .  Unlike  the  previous  b a s t a r d i z a t i o n  p e r i o d s c a u s e d b y  e t h n i c i t y a n d  military  tyranny ,  the  p r e s e n t  bastardization  in  the  M i l i t a r y i s m o r e  m e n a c i n g , t a k i n g  r e l i g i o u s d i m e n s i o n  which  has  re­ignited  t h e o l d w o u n d s  caused  by  ethnic  and  tribal  divisions  and  hatred  leading  to  break  out  of  the  Civil  W ar .  For  instance,  t h e N i g e r i a n M i l i t a r y w a s  pluralistically ,  secularly ,  neutrally  and  professionally composed indigenously  between  1957  and  1966,  after  which  it  was  marred  by  ethnicity  and  tribalism  leading  to  the  country's  bloody  Civil  W ar  of  1967­70.  After  the  Civil  W ar ,  the  Nigerian  Military  became  semiprofessionalized  leading  to  its  handing  over  to  civilians  in  1979. The  Military  retained  its  secularity ,  national  identity  a n d s e m i p r o f e s s i o n a l i s m a f t e r J u n e  1 9 9 8 l e a d i n g t o h a n d i n g o v e r t o  civilians  on  29th  May  1999  and  same  was  the  case  till  June  2015.

Jihadist  Fulani  Herdsmen  in  the  SouthE a s t T r i a n g u l a r o f I s u o c h i , O k i g w e ,  Umulolo  and  environs  where  several  d o z e n s o f d e f e n s e l e s s c i t i z e n s h a v e  been killed and hundreds abducted and  scores  disappeared  without  traces  till  date  since   the  beginning  of  2021.

E x c l u d e d f r o m t h e l i s t a r e r e t i r e d  Generals  (and  their  equivalents  in  the  Navy  and  the  Air  Force)  and  others  who  held  sway  from  July  2015  to  August  2022  and  those  that  will  retire  from  Sept  2022  and  above.  The  latter  are  excluded  b e c a u s e t h e y h a v e t r a i l e r l o a d s o f  c o n d u c t a t r o c i t y b a g g a g e a n d b e e n  c o r r u p t l y , r e l i g i o u s l y a n d t r i b a l l y  r a d i c a l i z e d . Our  Advocacy  Activities  Beyond  What  Filthy  Money  Or  Materialism  Can  Buy  Or  Influence

Constantly  labeling  Intersociety  and  its  priceless  advocacy  activities  in  the  East  as  “IPOB  sponsored  or  defense  of  ESN”  is  a  c l e a r i n d i c a t i o n o f  p r o f e s s i o n a l i s m g o n e  t o a b y s s f r o m t h e  N i g e r i a n A r m y . I t i s  a l s o a h e i g h t o f  quackery  and  alarmist  s o l d i e r i n g S a m e  s t a t e m e n t s u s e d b y  Army  and  the  Military  in  attacking  the  likes  of  Amnesty  International  and  others  in  the  North  are  same  being  used  in  a t t a c k i n g I n t e r s o c i e t y  in  the  East.  The  only  d i ff e r e n c e i s a d d i t i o n  of  “Boko  Haram”  from  t h e s i d e o f A m n e s t y  International  and  “ESN/IPOB”  from  the  side  of  Intersociety .  In  other  words,  it  is  “Amnesty  International  is  being  s p o n s o r e d b y B o k o H a r a m ” i n t h e  North  as  against  “Intersociety  is  being  sponsored  by  IPOB/ESN”  in  the  East.  It  is  also  sad  that  corruption  has  eaten  deep  into  the  fabrics  and  consciences  of  t h e N i g e r i a n s t a t e a c t o r s i n c l u d i n g  Nigerian  Army ,  to  the  extent  that  to  them  “everybody  or  every  group  in  Nigeria  is  capable  of  being  bribed  and  t h e i r a c t i v i t i e s q u a n t i fi e d i n g r a f t  m a t e r i a l i s m t e r m s ” . addition  to  some  researchers  on  Nigeria  working  for  their  international  rights  groups  being  Government  moles  and  turning  away  their  groups'  focus  on  Nigeria.  A Nigerian  Government  mole  w a s a l s o r e c e n t l y i n s t a l l e d a s ' I C C  President'  in  2018­2021.

Killiwe  in  action

He  was  a  superman  who  was  going  from  p l a c e t o p l a c e t o  p e r f o r m . P e o p l e  paid  to  watch  him.  I  saw  him  perform  at  our  primary  school  in  those  days.  I  think  h i s r e a l n a m e w a s  N w o z u z u  N w a c h u k w u ( o r  something  like  that).  I  heard  that  “Killi  W e”  was  a  nickname  he  got  after  a  fight  with  a  certain  man,  one  commentator  said.

A great  natural  Superman!  Nwozuzu  Nwachukwu  (Son  of  God).  “Killi  W e”  was  a  nickname  he  got  after  a  fight  with  a s t u b b o r n m a n “ T i c k m a n ” w h o  refused  to  pay  him  his  money  for  a  truck  load  of  goods  he  conveyed  from  the  market  to  the  man's  home.  He  used  to  push  a  wooden  two  wheel  truck  with  which  he  carried  goods  for  people. Then, T ruck  vehicles  were  not  around,  or  were  not  affordable.  So,  after  dropping  off  the  goods,  the  man  w o u l d n o t p a y w h a t N w a c h u k w u  char ged  claiming  it  was  too  high.  He  tried  to  walk  away  and  Nwachukwu

grabbed  him  by  the  hand  insisting  he  must  pay .  A fight  ensued  and  he  pinned  the  man  to  the  ground.  The  man's  wife  ran  in  and  came  out  with  a  wooden

In  the  early  90's,  we  were  asked  to  pay  some  money  so  that  he  will  come  and  display  his  power .  W e  gladly  paid  the  money On  the  D  day  od  his  assuMed  coming,  we  waited,  we  couldn't  see  him,  so,  we  left.  The  following  day  in  school,  some  students  that  were  patient  enough  narrated  how  he  came,  how  he  carried  four  students  on  each  of  his  hand  a n d s o m e m a n y p o w e r a c r o b a t Menn…..  It  was  like  a  hell  to  me  that  I

I remember Killiwe. He was a fat dude  and  used  to  tour  the  country  performing  stunts  like  grabbing  cars  by  the  bumper  a n d p r e v e n t i n g i t f r o m m o v i n g a s  someone  stepped  on  the  pedal.

I  also  remember  a  Seven­Seven  song  about  Killiwe:

“Killiwe  Nwaozize  Nwachukwu Abeg  make  you  help  me  carry  my  load”

W h y t e i n s p i r e d  m i l l i o n s w i t h h i s  h y m n s w h i c h h e  c o m p o s e d i n a  l e p r o s a r i u m . M o r e  t h a n f o u r d e c a d e s  after  his  death,  he  is  still  remembered  by  a  n e w g e n e r a t i o n o f  Igbos  and  non­Igbos.

H i s s t i r r i n g h y m n ,  “ A t u l e g w u ” ( n e v e r  fear)  became  a  source  of  comfort  for  Igbos  during  the  30­month  Civil  war  from  1967  t o 1 9 7 0 . I t r e m a i n s  the  favourite  of  choirs  i n I g b o s p e a k i n g  churches.

He  started  showing  symptoms  of  the  ailment  in  1918,  the  same  year  the  Spanish  flu  swept  across  the  world  k i l l i n g m i l l i o n s o f p e o p l e , a n d b y  1919,  he  had  been  diagnosed  with  l e p r o s y , a b a c t e r i a l i n f e c t i o n t h a t  ravages  the  skin  and  nerves  and  causes  painful  deformities.

Before  his  tragic  death  in  an  a u t o c r a s h i n 1 9 7 7 , I k o l i  Harcourt  Whyte  was  one  of  the  most  admired  and  beloved  figures  in  Eastern  Nigeria.

This  is  the  story  of  I k o l i H a r c o u r t  W h y t e , t h e g i f t e d  c h o r a l c o n d u c t o r ,  composer  and  a  figure  o f h o p e w h o s e l i f e  h a s c o n t i n u e d t o i n s p i r e m a n y  generations.

Across  the  world,  being  diagnosed  with  leprosy  means  a  sentence  to  life  i n i s o l a t i o n V i c t i m s a r e t y p i c a l l y  isolated  from  their  families  and  exiled  to  a  leprosarium  which  is  mostly  far  from  the  city  center .  They  are  never  allowed  to  mix  with  healthy  people  over  fear  of  spreading  the  disease. When  Harcourt  was  diagnosed  with  leprosy  at  age  14,  the  teenager  would  have  to  live  away  from  his  family .  He  was  sent  to  Port  Harcourt  Hospital  and  later  to  Uzuakoli  Leprosy  Centre  in

And  he's  one  of  the  few  composers  of  his  era  still  inspiring  musicians  and  worshippers  today

D e s c r i b e d b y m a n y h i s t o r i a n s a s  Nigeria's  most  famous  leprosy  victim,  it  will  also  not  be  out  of  place  to  call  h i m t h e m o s t i n s p i r i n g H a r c o u r t  W h y t e w a s n ' t b o r n a l e p e r t o h i s  parents  Munabo  and  Odibo  circa  1905  in  Abonnema,  Rivers  State.

A b i a S t a t e e s t a b l i s h e d b y t h e  Methodist  Church,  where  he  spent  the  last  45  years  of  his  life.

B e f o r e h i s a i l m e n t , h e h a d t a k e n  interest  in  music  as  a  student,  and  was  an  active  member  of  his  school's  brass  band  where  he  played  the  flute  and

side­drum.  His  ailment  appeared  to  g i v e h i m t i m e t o b e c o m e m o r e  devoted  to  music  and  he  used  the  period  of  his  isolation  to  study  the  B i b l e a n d t h e h y m n s s u n g i n t h e  Hospital  chapel.  T aking  motivation  from  his  predicament,  the  Bible  and  hymns,  he  wrote  over  200  songs  and  led  a  choir  of  lepers  that  toured  towns  in  the  East.

the  traditional  music  of  the  people  and  then  encouraged  Whyte  to  develop  his  own  personal  style  by  listening  to  and  composing  songs  that  sounded  more  like  those  tunes,  rather  than  the  ones  in  the  Methodist  hymn  book.

Whyte  was  an  outstanding  Christian  music  composer  in  his  own  right  and  although  a  Kalabari  man,  his  music,  a c c o r d i n g t o G h a n a i a n w r i t e r  A l e x a n d e r A k o r l i e A g o r d o h , h a s a  very  natural  Igbo  rhythm  which  is  the  d o m i n a n t l a n g u a g e i n U z u a k o l i  where  he  lived  most  of  his  life. I n U z u a k o l i , W h y t e m e t a B r i t i s h  m i s s i o n a r y a n d m e d i c a l d o c t o r ,  Thomas  Frank  Davey  who  ,according  to  BBC  ,was  a  music  lover  and  a  pianist.  His  encounter  with  Davey  which  could  be  described  as  divine  helped  Whyte  refine  his  music  career .

“Dr  Davey  taught  him  everything  he  knew  about  music,  that  he  acquired  by  studying  the  Methodist  hymn  book,”  Kanu  Achinivu,  a  professor  of  music  w h o w a s a f r i e n d a n d p r o t é g é o f  Whyte  told  BBC  in  a  2017  interview . D u r i n g t r i p s t o s u r r o u n d i n g a n d  r e m o t e v i l l a g e s t o t r e a t l e p r o s y  patients,  Davey ,  it  was  said,  recorded

I n 1 9 4 9 , w h e n h e w a s c u r e d o f  Leprosy ,  Whyte  refused  to  leave  the  hospital  and  chose  to  dedicate  the  rest  of  his  life  to  living  with  the  patients,  c o m p o s i n g i n s p i r a t i o n a l m u s i c a n d  e d u c a t i n g o n t h e n e e d f o r c a r e o f  Leprosy  patients.

Between  1967  and  1970  when  the  Eastern  region  dominated  by  the  Igbos  went  to  war  against  Nigeria,  the  Igbos  derived  strength  and  inspiration  from  H a r c o u r t W h y t e ' s s o n g ' A t u l e g w u '  (never  fear).

“Each  time  we  gathered,  the  chances  were  that  we  would  end  up  with  some  recording  of  his,”  said  Ejike  Ago  who  fought  in  the  Biafran  army .  “It  is  not  only  the  Biafran  soldiers  alone.  The  Christians,  each  time  we  gathered  had  his  recordings  playing.”

Seven  years  after  the  civil  war ,  Whyte  died  in  a  motor  accident  and  four  years  after  his  death,  renowned  Nigerian  p l a y w r i g h t , O l a R o t i m i , w a s  commissioned  to  produce  a  play  for  N i g e r i a ' s 2 1 s t I n d e p e n d e n c e  anniversary  on  October  1,  1981.  He  chose  Whyte's  story .  Prior  to  that  time,  Rotimi's  wife,  Hazel  Mae  Rotimi  and

“The  popularity  of  his  compositions  throughout  Igbo  land,  even  before  the  impact  of  Y outh  Fellowship,  earned  him  the  right  to  be  called  the  father  of  Igbo  church  music,”  Agordoh  wrote  in  his  book  'African  Music:  T raditional  and  Contemporary'.

I a l w a y s c h o r t l e w h e n p e o p l e  i g n o r a n t l y s a y t h a t I g b o l a n d i s  landlocked  and  doesn't  have  access  to  the  sea.  That's  completely  spurious  and  blatantly  misleading.  Igboland  is  not  and  will  never  be  landlocked.  I  have  m a d e a s i m i l a r p o s t l i k e t h i s e a r l y  20221  in  this  same  page  2  weeks  before  I  published  this  one  same  2021.

According  to  W ikipedia,  a  landlocked  s t a t e o r l a n d l o c k e d c o u n t r y i s a  sovereign  state  entirely  enclosed  by  land,  or  whose  only  coastlines  lie  on  closed seas. Now , that we have known  what  a  Landlocked  country  is,  I  will  explicitly  explain  why  Igboland  is  not  landlord.  Let's  go.1.  River  Niger ,  one  of  the  two  lar gest  inland  water  bodies  in  N i g e r i a p a s s e s t h r o u g h I g b o l a n d  c o n n e c t i n g t h e t w o m o s t i m p o r t a n t  cities  in  the  region,  Asaba  and  Onitsha  together River  Nigeria  then  journeys  downwards  relentlessly  through  other  Igbo  villages  down  to  the  Niger  Delta

where it empties itself into the  Atlantic  Ocean.

Y ou  all  should  understand  that  there's  a  difference  being  landlocked  and  having  access  to  the  sea.  A big  difference.  For  instance,  the  London  area  is  completely  landlocked  but  London  still  controls  m u c h o f t h e U K s h i p p i n g a c t i v i t i e s  through  the  several  river  ports  built  on  the  River  Thames.  River  Thames  runs  through  the  centre  of  London,  emptying  itself  into  the  ocean.

Igboland  doesn't  stop  with  only  Abia,  Imo,  Anambra,  Enugu  and  Ebonyi.  The  so  called  South  East,  which  was  created  i n A b u j a b y G e n S a n i A b a c h a i n  1993.There  are  huge  population  of  the  Igbo  People  in  Delta  and  Rivers  State.  In  fact,  Igboland  stretches  to  Igbanke  in  Edo  state,  Umuezekaoha  in  Benue  and  as far as Port Harcourt, known hitherto  as  Igwe  Ọcha,  Opobo  and  Bonny  in  Rivers  State.  Opobo  which  just  lies  close  to  the  Atlantic  Ocean  was  founded  b y a n I g b o m a n c a l l e d M b a n a s o  Ozurumba,  otherwise  known  as  King  Jaja.  Are  you  shocked?  The  town  today  has  both  the  Igbo  speaking  parts  and  Ibani  speaking  parts.

Even  in  the  South  East,  we  have  big  beaches  in  Obuaku  Ndoki  which  came  about  as  a  result  of  the  confluence  of  Imo  river  and  the  Azumini  Blue  River .  Obuaku  port  when  functional  is  just  25  nautical  miles  from  the  Atlantic  ocean.

W e  also  have  Ndibe  beach  in  Ebonyi.

O g u t a L a k e , i f d r e d g e d c a n  a c c o m m o d a t e b i g s h i p s . A l l t h e s e  bodies  of  water  are  navigable  routes  to  the  Atlantic ocean. Even the Imo River  if  dredged  can  be  of  great  importance  to  a d i r e c t a c c e s s t o t h e s e a s t a t u s o f  I g b o l a n d W h e n t h e A l a o j i P o w e r

P r o j e c t w a s b e i n g c o n s t r u c t e d , t h e  heavy  machines  and  equipment  were  ferried  across  the  Imo  river  down  to  Aba.

W i t h t h e f o l l o w i n g p o i n t s a b o v e , I  guess  you  believe  now  that  Igbo  land  is  not  a  Landlock  and  I  believe  you  would  be  able  to  explain  to  folks  who  believe  that  Igboland  is  DOT and  Landlocked.   Before  you  start  asking  me  to  leave  Riverine  areas  out  of  my  igbo,  Igbo   Igboland  was  was  not  created  in  1993  w h e n A b a c h a r e g i m e c r e a t e d  geopolitical  zones  in  NIgeria.  Thank  you.

A s s o c i a t i o n o f N i g e r i a  (MACBAN) has appealed to  Anambra

G o v e r n o r C h u k w u m a S o l u d o t o  temporarily  suspend  the  ban  on  cattle  movement  on  foot  in  the  state,  The  B i a f r a N a t i o n a l i s t l e a r n t v i a  ANAMBRA PEOPLE  reports.

The  appeal  was  made  on  Monday  by  t h e S o u t h e a s t l e a d e r o f M A C B A N ,  A l h a j i G i d a d o S i d i k k i , i n A w k a ,  Anambra  State.

He  said  the  ban  is  too  sudden  and  many  o f t h e c a t t l e r e a r e r s h a v e n o o t h e r  means  of  livelihood,  ar guing  that  the  ban  will  have  a  negative  effect  on  them  and  their  livelihood.

Sidikki  used  the  point  that  MACBAN  members  have  been  living  peacefully  in  the  state  as  part  of  the  points  to  strengthen  his  appeal.

Speaking  in  a  chat  with  The  Nation,  he  said;  “Majority  of  us  (Fulanis),  don't  know  any  other  business  more  than  rearing  of  cattles  in  this  W orld.

“Some  of  us  were  born  and  bred  in  this  r e a r i n g o f c a t t l e b u s i n e s s h e r e i n  Anambra  state.  W e  have  no  other  place  to  go.

“The  herders  are  aware  that  the  state  governor  has  flagged  off  massive  tree  p l a n t i n g e x e r c i s e i n t h e 1 8 1  communities  as  part  of  measures  to  control  the  spread  of  gully  erosion  in  the  state.

“And  as  law  abiding  citizens,  we  have  cautioned  all  our  members  and  equally  ur ged  them  to  protect  the  trees  in  their  various  host  communities.

“ O u r m e m b e r s h a v e r e m a i n e d  committed  to  peaceful  coexistence  with  their  host  communities  in  the  State  and  the  Southeast  geopolitical  zone  at  lar ge.

“ W e t h e r e f o r e , c a l l o n c o n c e r n e d  s t a k e h o l d e r s i n c l u d i n g t h e m e d i a t o  help  us  beg  the  governor ,  if  possible,  to  revisit  his  decision  on  the  ban”.

Czechoslovakia  was  made  up  of  two  ethnic  groups,  the  Czech  and  the  Slovakians.  Both  separated  peacefully  on  1st  January  1993.  The  former  is  today  10.6  million  people  and  the  latter  5.4  million.  Added  together ,   they're  not  up  to  Lagos.  Y et,  they  split  for  peace.  T wo  masters  can't  be  in  the  same  house.

Y u g o s l a v i a i n 1 9 9 1 w a s 2 3 2 m i l l i o n ,  b a r e l y m o r e t h a n L a g o s p o p u l a t i o n . I t  broke  into  six  countries  same  year  ­  all  along  ethnic  lines,  namely:  Bosnia  and  H e r z e g o v i n a , C r o a t i a , M a c e d o n i a ,  Montenegro,  Serbia,  and  Slovenia.

Then  the  big  brother ,  USSR.  It  had,  at  least,  the  following  ethnic  groups  identified  by  their  languages:

Sit  down  there  and  be  preaching  unity  in  Nigeria  as  if  you're  the  kindest  gentleman  on earth while you have no solution to the  genocide  in  Southern  Kaduna,  the  illegal  but  officially  condoned  arms  in  the  hands  of  killer  herdsmen  roaming  the  country ,  and  be  condemning  those  better  informed  a b o u t t h e f a c t t h a t t h e c o u n t r y i s  under going  the  strains  of  a  forced  union  and  should  be  peacefully  restructured  or  let  people  go  their  separate  ways.

In  Europe,  the  two  best  examples  of  fairly  stable  multi­ethnic  states  are  the  UK  and  S w i t z e r l a n d . T h e f o r m e r i s l e d b y  reasonable  men  who  permitted  regional  autonomy  to  the  Irish,  the  Scots  and  the  W e l s h , w h i l e t h e E n g l i s h d o m i n a t e  W estminster That's  something  some  of  us  are  asking  for ,  but  you're  fighting  against  it  in  your  own  country  wracked  by  ethnic  crisis.  Y our  own  people  are  better  off  under  oppression  of  fellow  black  men  because  your  people  have  bad  leaders  who  can't  do  better  than  their  new  internal  colonisers.

The  latter  country ,  Switzerland,  has  four  ethnic  groups.  Each  of  them  rotates  the  presidency  annually  through  seven  cantons  that  constitute  the  federation  units.  All  the  four  languages  of  the  four  ethnic  groups  are  recognized  as  official  languages  and  school  l a n g u a g e s t o b o o t , n a m e l y : G e r m a n ,  French,  Italian,  and  Romansch  that  has  just  a  few  thousand  speakers!

There's  nowhere  in  the  world  where  the  Caucasians  allow  the  domination  of  their  group  by  another

To  understand  Nigeria  you  need  to  k n o w t h e h i s t o r y t o e x p l a i n t h e  politics.

When  the  British  arrived  in  what  became  Northern  Nigeria,  there  were  by  then  lets  say  for  ar guments  sake  two  nations  ruling  the  North  predominantly  the  Fulani  and  then  also  the  Indigenous  Hausa,  the  latter  of  which  the  Hausa  kingdoms  were  constantly  b e i n g a t t a c k e d b y t h e F u l a n i w h o a r e  c o n q u e r s b y n a t u r e . T h e  B r i t i s h t o k e e p a b a l a n c e  assisted  the  Hausa  and  with  t h e i r h e l p c o n f r o n t e d t h e  Fulani.

T h e F u l a n i u n d e r s t a n d i n g  conquest  took  to  their  new  masters  the  British  and  in  return  for  their  new  found  c o m p l i a n t a t t i t u d e L o r d  Lugard  made  every  Emir  in  every  town  in  the  north  a  Fulani,  inadvertently  giving  power  back  to  the  Fulani.  (I  wonder  if  this  is  where  the  p h r a s e “ t h e o n l y t h i n g  Nigeria  understands  is  war”  stems  from).

T h e n i n 1 9 1 4 f o r fi n a n c i a l r e a s o n s t h e  British  amalgamated  the  Northern  Nigeria  P r o t e c t o r a t e w i t h t h e S o u t h e r n  Protectorates,  now  these  were  entirely  two  v e r y d i ff e r e n t r e g i o n s , a s t h e s o u t h e r n  protectorate  wasn't  a  conquered  region  it  was  a  democratic  area  of  many  nations  that  had  been  developed  over  thousands  of  years  of  trading  with  foreign  lands  (the  southern  protectorate  agreed  upon  to  protect  trading)  and  was  religiously  predominantly  Judea  Christian  and  in  every  sense  was  far  more  developed  than  the  north  in  every  aspect;  education,  standard  of  living  etc..  following  the  amalgamation  there  was  a  great  need  in  the  north  for  jobs  only  the  southerners  could  really  do  for  development  of  the  country  like  railways,  education  etc..

So  they  were  sent  to  the  north,  however  they  were  still  the  foreigners  and  they  could  never  fit  in,  understandably  deep  seated  bad  feelings  embedded  itself  as  the  Northerners

S o u t h e r n e r s c o u l d n e v e r fi t i n t o t h e

s o c i a l / p o l i t i c a l s y s t e m a s i t w a s n o t  designed  to  do  so.  (Oil  doesn't  mix  with  water). Now the British have left following  independence  the  Fulani  are  still  conquering  as  is  there  nature  by  political  means.

or  upstart  seven  which  developed  to  the  south and west of the original group). Each  state  had  its  own  traditions  and  legends  of  origin  and  at  varying  degrees  had  embraced  or  come  under  the  influence  of  Islam.  It  had  been  said  that  it  would  be  strictly  incorrect  to  refer  to  these  Hausa  states  as  if  they  belong  to  the  same  ethnic  group.  They  were  people  who  spoke  the  Hausa  language  and  adopted  the  Hausa  mode  of  dress  and  life  generally

When  the  19th  century  opened,  the  F u l a n i a p p e a r e d t o b e t h e  p r e d o m i n a n t r a c e i n t h e S u d a n Fulani  is  the  Hausa  name  for  the  people  who  call  themselves  Fulbe.  They  themselves  made  a  distinction  between  the  Cattle  Fulani  and  the  T own Fulani;  The latter included the  aristocratic  families  such  as  T orobe.  The  origin  of  these  people  is  less  than  clear .  What  is  more  certain,  however  is  that  by  the  16th  century ,  there  was  a  s t e a d y m o v e m e n t o f t h o s e F u l a n i  people  from  the  region  now  known  as  S e n e g a l t o w a r d s t h e E a s t t h r o u g h  Messina  and  the  Hausa  states  toward  Chad  and  Adamawa  and  beyond.

F r o m t h e r a n k o f t h e F u l a n i t h e g r e a t  r e l i g i o u s l e a d e r s o f t h e 1 8 t h a n d 1 9 t h  centuries  came  in  the  Sudan  to  launch  a  series  of  religious  movements  which,  as  o f t e n h a p p e n e d i n I s l a m , p a s s e d i n t o  political  wars.  W e  are  here  concerned  with  t h e r e l i g i o u s m o v e m e n t t h a t a ff e c t e d  Northern  Nigeria.

Usman  Dan  Fodio  who  was  subsequently  known  as  Shehu  or  Sheikh  was  born  a  Fulani  in  the  Hausa  state  of  Gobir  about  1750.  He  was  brought  up  with  his  brother Abdullahi  as  a  strict  Muslim  and  after  studying  for  some  years  in  Agades  he  felt  the  call  to  dedicate  his  life  to  teaching  the  faith.  On  his  return  from  Agades,  Dan  Fodio  acted  as  a  t u t o r t o t h e S a r k i n G o b i r ' s t w o s o n s i n  Alkaluwa.  One  of  these  was  Y unfa  who  was  later  to  succeed  to  the  throne.

In  the  interval  before  his  accession  Dan  F o d i o f e l t o b l i g e d t o w i t h d r a w f r o m  Alkaluwa  giving  his  reason  the  reversion  to  pagan  practices  by  the  court  on  the  hostility

shown  towards  the  Muslim  faith.  When  Y unfa  finally  became  king,  he  sort  out  his  old  tutor  and  encouraged  him  to  resume  his  itinerant  preaching.  Dan  Fodio  soon  fell  out  with  the  new  king  and  in  1804  was  driven  to  flight.  A party  rallied  to  him,  defeated  the  king,  and  proclaimed  Dan  Fodio,  (now  their  leader)  Sarkin  Musulmi  Commander  of  the  Faithful,  a  title  which  is  still  held  by  his  successor ,  the  Sultan  of  Sokoto. A general  movement  broke  out  all  over  the  area  which  later  became  Northern  Nigeria.

T h e l i n e o f c l e a v a g e d i d n o t r u n c l e a r  between  the  Fulani  and  the  Hausas  but  the  F u l a n i w h o p r o v i d e d t h e e n e r g y a n d  ambition  to  the  apparent  religious  cause.  E v e r y w h e r e f o l l o w e r s o f t h e S h e h u ,  appointed  or  self­appointed,  received  flags  f r o m h i s h a n d s T h e y c a l l e d u p o n t h e  faithful  to  drive  out  the  old  Hausa  or  as  they  were  called  the  Habe  dynasties  and  then  set  themselves  up  in  turn  as  rulers  subject  to  Sokoto  which  had  become  the  seat  of  the  Fulani  authority  in  1810.  Not  only  was  this  c h a n g e a c c o m p l i s h e d i n t h e o l d H a u s a  k i n g d o m s b u t i n t h e i m p e t u s o f t h e  m o v e m e n t , F u l a n i l e a d e r s p u s h e d t h e  boundaries  of  Islam  south,  incorporating  in  varying  degrees  many  pagan  tribes.

A s i n d i c a t e d e a r l i e r t h e m o v e m e n t f o r  r e l i g i o u s r e v i v a l d e g e n e r a t e d i n t o a  political  war  of  conquest.  Consequently  the  son  of  the  Shehu,  Bello,  who  succeeded  him  became more interested in the military and  political  results  of  the  religious  revival  than  in  spreading  the  faith.

The  record  for  Fulani  success  had  some  important  exceptions.  The  ancient  Kanuri  kingdom  of  Bornu  with  its  capital  near  Lake  Chad  and  itself  Moslem,  threw  back  the  Fulani  invaders.  The  holy  man  of  Bornu,  ElKanemi,  taunted  Shehu  Usman  Dan  Fodio  with  having  turned  a  war  of  religion  into  one  of  conquest  and  with  attacking  his  coreligionists.

El­Kanemi  frankly  admitted  that  some  of  his  Chiefs  had  relapsed  into  heathenism,  t h a t t h e A l k a l i s o r M o s l e m j u d g e s  sometimes  took  bribes  and  women  went  unveiled;  but  he  ar gued  that  this  was  not  sufficient  excuse  for  war This  opposition  from  Bornu,  as  we  shall  see  when  we  come  to  consider  the  pattern  and  the  spread  of  the  atrocities  in  the  1966  program,  seems  to  appear  its  head  once  again  in  1966.  Bello  in  his  defense  of  his  fathers  action  justified  mainly  on  the  ground  of  proselytism.  Said  he:

@And  the  second  reason  for  our  Jihad  was  t h a t t h e y w e r e h e a t h e n s , t h e p e o p l e o f  Hausa.  A further  reason  for  the  war  was  that  we  sought  to  aid  truth  against  falsehood  and  to  strengthen  Islam.  For  to  make  war  on  the  heathen  from  the  beginning,  if  one  has  the  power  is  declared  a  duty So  also  it  is  it's  a  duty  to  make  war  on  those  heathen  who  have  converted  to  Islam  and  later  have  reverted  to  heathenism,  if  one  has  the  power In  truth  we  stated  at  the  beginning  of  this  that  the  Hausa  chiefs,  their  people  and  their  mallams  were  evil  doers”.

At the beginning of the present century , the  British  administration  emer ged  in  Northern  Nigeria.  They  based  their  title  on  conquest.  S i r F r e d e r i c k L u g a r d , t h e fi r s t B r i t i s h  governor  of  Northern  Nigeria  asserted  in  one  of  his  early  reports  as  follows:­  “The  F u lan i  h o ld th eir s u zer ain ty b y r ig h t  o f  conquest.  I  can  myself  see  no  injustice  in  the  transfer  of  the  suzerainty  thus  acquired  to  the  British  by  the  same  right  of  conquest”.

The  Fulani  caste  seemed  to  have  accepted  their  masters  without  much  resistance.  The  explanation  of  this,  it  is  said,  was  due  in  part  to  the  insecurity  of  the  Fulani  position  in  relation  to  their  subjects  who  had  shown  little loyalty to the Fulani during the period  of  their  confrontation  with  the  British.

The  British,  by  force  of  arms,  broke  the  Fulani  ascendancy  in  the  north,  but  by  twist  of  irony ,  restore  that  supremacy  under  the  system  of  indirect  rule.  Once  the  suzerainty  of  the  British  was  accepted  by  the  Fulani,  the  British  were  content  to  allow  an  even  to  support  and  consolidate  the  authority  of  the  Fulani  Emirs  in  their  various  Emirates.

The  Fulani  Emir  was  left  as  the  head  of  the  native  administration,  the  head  of  the  native  judiciary ,  the  religious  head,  and  practically  t h e h e a d o f e v e r y t h i n g i n h i s e m i r a t e Offices  in  the  native  administration,  in  the  native  administration  police,  in  the  native  judiciary ,  what  filled  by  appointees  of  the  emirs.  These  appointees  were  invariably  the  r e l a t i o n s o f t h e E m i r o r h i s c o u r t i e r s Moslem  religion  preempted  every  aspect  of  life  in  the  Emirates.  This  society  became  a  ' c l o s e d s h o p ' S t r a n g e r s e s p e c i a l l y n o n Moslems,  had  no  place  in  the  society

It  is  generally  accepted  that  in  1966  there  were  over  2  million  Easterners  in  Northern  Nigeria.  Their  presence  in  the  north  it  was  all  connected  with  the  amalgamation  of  northern  and  southern  Nigeria  in  1914  by  the  British.  Unfortunately ,  although  they  were  there  in  such  lar ge  numbers  and  for  so

long  and  filled  a  very  important  position  in  the  economic  and  political  development  of  Northern  Nigeria,  they  were  never  fully  integrated  into  the  mainstream  of  life  in  society .  They  became  what  sociologist  call  a  privilege  pariah  class­  'privileged'  because  p a r t i c i p a t i n g i n a n d b e n e fi t i n g f r o m t h e  m o d e r n i z i n g s e c t o r s o f t h e e c o n o m y t o  w h i c h t h e n o r t h e r n M u s l i m s h a d b e e n  induced  to  turn  their  back.

Their  standard  of  living  was  higher  than  the  normal  run  of  life  of  most  northerners.  They  were  'pariah'  because  they  were  kept  outside  the  rank  system  of  society Because  of  the  attitude  of  northern  Muslims  to  modern  education,  the  administrators  of  the  day  were  compelled  to  employ  these  Easterners  though  they  disliked  having  them.  It  cut  across  the  policy  of  the  day  of  separating  the  north  from  the  south.

'Divide  and  rule'  is  a  cliché  which  is  grown  o d i o u s b y b e i n g f r e q u e n t l y u s e d f o r a l l  situations weather appropriate or not; but it  really  enshrined  an  important  gem  of  British  colonial  policy .  The  north  and  south  were  amalgamated  in  1914  ostensibly  under  One  government  yet  the  'writ'  of  the  legislative  Council  in  Lagos  did  not  run  into  Northern  Nigeria.  The  British  colonial  administrator  reserved  the  right  to  legislate  alone  for  the  n o r t h u n t i l t h e R i c h a r d s c o n s t i t u t i o n o f  1946.

E a s t e r n e r s i s a n d i n f a c t o t h e r n o n northerners  were  restricted  in  most  of  the  towns  to  strangers  quarters  called  Sabon  Gari.  In  these  circumstance  the  Easterners  a n d N o r t h e r n e r s g r e w u p a s e p a r a t e  c o m m u n i t i e s D i s s i m i l a r i t i e s w e r e  accentuated  and  old  prejudices  hardened.  S i n c e 1 9 5 0 a t t e m p t s , e s p e c i a l l y b y  southerners,  were  made  to  bridge  the  gap  but  such  attempts  were  regarded  by  the  northern  aristocracy  as  an  imposition  from  the  south  and  were  smashed.

T h e e m e r g e n c e o f p o l i t i c a l p a r t i e s i n  Nigeria  did  not  improve  matters  in  the  north  either As  far  as  the  north  was  concerned  it  did  not  succeed  in  breaking  down  the  old  barriers.  The  dominant  political  party  in  the  n o r t h ( t h e N o r t h e r n P e o p l e ' s C o n g r e s s )  started  off  as  a  party  of  native  administration  functionaries  and  appointees  of  the  Emir's  and  never  really  went  beyond  that.

It  is  our  view  that  the  foundation  of  Nigeria  contain  the  seeds  of  her  own  destruction.

Igbo  trying  to  annex  other  people's  land,  but  look  at  how  sizable  amount  of  Igbo  were  cut  off  and  place  in  the  North  as  northern  communities.

Presumably  some  people  hoped  that  the  U m u e z e o k o h a p e o p l e w i l l l o s e t h e i r  identity  as  is  happening  with  some  Ikwerre  p e o p l e i n R i v e r s S t a t e . U m u e z e o k o h a  community  is  in  the  present  Benue  state  and  comprises  of  over  300  villages  of  Igbo  speaking  areas.  Ado,  Oju,  Okpoku  and  Obi  are  local  government  areas  that  are  part  of  the  newly  proposed  Apa  state  that,  which  the  Idoma  have  been  calling  for Inikiri  Ichari,  one  of  the  market  in  Benue  I g b o s e r v i n g t h e U m u e z e o k o h a  community .

Apa  state  must  be  obtained  and  added  to  t h e S E i n t h e i n t e r e s t o f u n i f y i n g t h e  peoples  with  their  kith  and  kin  in  the  SE.

Instead  of  the  joyful  songs,  they  were  used  to, they now sing dir ges.  The Benue Igbos  who  are  called  by  the  name  Umuezeokoha  are  not  happy  that  they  have  been  neglected  f o r a l o n g t i m e n o w b y s u c c e s s i v e  governments,  federal,  state  or  local,  and  they  are  blaming  this  on  their  ethnic  origin  and  the  fact  that  they  are  in  the  wrong  state.

Interestingly ,  the  people  share  the  same  Benue  South  Senatorial  Constituency  with  S e n a t e P r e s i d e n t , D a v i d M a r k . T h o u g h  Igbos  ,  the  Umuezeokoha  Community ,  due  perhaps  to  accident  of  history ,  are  found  in  Benue  State  instead  of  Ebonyi  State  ,  being  the  closest  Igbo  state  where  their  kinsmen,  the  Ezza  Ezekuna  kindred  are  found.

According  to  the  President,  Benue  Igbo  Union,  Mr .  Nweke  Cedrick  Ifeanyi,  his  p e o p l e a r e w a l l o w i n g i n p o v e r t y a n d  neglect  and  are  often  denied  democracy

in  Nigeria.  But  since  then,  he  lamented,  t h e y h a v e n o t b e e n r e c o g n i z e d b y  successive  governments  both  at  the  state  a n d f e d e r a l l e v e l s i n b o t h E b o n y i a n d  Benue  states.

“Although  before  the  independence  and  the  Nigerian  civil  war ,  which  lasted  for  about  three  years,  we  used  to  experience  government  attention  to  the  extent  that  the  m i s s i o n a r i e s t h e n e s t a b l i s h e d o n e l o c a l  p r i m a r y s c h o o l a t U m u e z e o k o h a  c o m m u n i t y w h i c h c o m p r i s e s o v e r 3 0 0  villages  of  Igbo  speaking  areas  that  time.  The  school  was  generally  accepted  by  our  elders  then  and  we  did  witness  medical  attention.  “But  since  after  the  civil  war ,  we  in  the  entire  300  Igbo­speaking  villages  in  Benue  State  have  been  dumped  by  the  Nigerian  government.

S e n a t o r i a l D i s t r i c t W e h a v e n e v e r  experienced  any  government  attention,  let  alone  a  project  from  the  local,  state  and  federal  governments  up  till  date.”  The  Igbo  Union  President  also  disclosed  that  a  place  with  a  population  of  over  one  million  people  has  no  designated  political  ward,  no  councillorship  representative  neither  at  the  local  government  level  nor  at  the  state  g o v e r n m e n t l e v e l d e s p i t e t h e i r v o t i n g  population.  He  said  even  Senator  David  Mark and Governor Gabriel Suswan have  been  winning  all  their  elections  in  the  area.

They  lack  portable  water  for  their  families.

M r . N w e k e a l s o n a r r a t e d h o w t h e i r  children  die  in  their  lar ge  numbers  because  of  lack  of  immunization,  which  he  said  they  have  never  witnessed  since  the  return  of  democracy .  H e  als o  painted  a  gory  picture  of  how  they  were  swindled  of  N 6 , 0 0 0 e a c h f o r i n s e c t i c i d e t r e a t e d  mosquito  nets,  which  were  given  free  to  neighbouring  communities  by  the  federal  government.

“W e  are  lacking  so  many  things,  including  a  health  centre,  political  ward,  good  roads,  good  water ,  and  electricity There  is  no  salary  earner  in  our  place  to  the  extent  that  the  mosquito  treated  insecticide  nets  given  freely  by  the  federal  government  was  sold  to  us  at  the  rate  of  N6,000  each,  some  even  paid  without  claiming  it  till  date,”  Nweke  said.

“All  our  roads  are  narrow;  we  do  not  have  any  motorable  road  in  our  area  at  all,  last  time  when  we  visited  the  local  government  chairmen  and  complained  about  the  issue  of  selling  mosquito  nets  to  us,  what  they  said  was  that  the  era  of  mosquito  nets  had  come  and  gone.  This  attracted  exchange  of  gazes,  and  the  question  whether  we  are  still  a  part  of  this  country .  Imagine  as  we  are  in  this  dry  season,  we  hardly  see  water  to  drink,  wash  and  cook,  talk  less  of  taking  bath.  Before  we  see  water  to  do  something,  one  has  to  trek  up  to  30  kilometres  to  a  place  where  there  is  unpurified  dam  water ,  but  in  this  place,  you  must  queue  up  in  a  line  before  it  will  get  to  your  turn,”  he  said.

Another  member  of  the  community ,  Chief  John  Nwali  also  narrated  the  ordeal  of  the  p e o p l e i n t h e h a n d s o f s u c c e s s i v e  g o v e r n m e n t s i n t h e s t a t e , a d d i n g ,

“Sometimes  we  do  lament  whether  we  are  different  from  other  human  beings  created  by  God.  Some  of  them  that  claim  to  be

natives  of  the  state  mock  us  by  telling  us  to  wait  to  benefit  from  government  only  when  the  Biafran  nation  which  we  fought  for  comes  into  reality .”

“At  times  we  nurse  the  idea  of  belonging  to  another  country .  In  fact,  if  we  are  close  to  another  country ,  we  could  have  declared  our  intention  to  become  their  citizens,  but  this  one  we  are  in  the  midst  of  Nigeria,  we  s p e a k N i g e r i a n l a n g u a g e , p r a c t i c e  N i g e r i a n c u l t u r e a n d r e l i g i o n , i n e v e r y  election  we  vote  and  still  we  are  treated  with  great  scorn  and  neglect  as  if  we  do  not  e x i s t . Y e t , w e h a v e s o m e b o d y l i k e t h e  Senate  President,  living  in  Abuja  with  our  mandate.

Even  in  the  last  201 1  general  election,  I  was  the  PDP Campaign  Coordinator  for  Benue  Igbo  branch,  but  since  that  time  till  now ,  we  are  still  in  the  same  condition.  W e  have  been  regarded  as  slaves  in  the  country  of  our  own.  Even  the  only  primary  school  that  w a s b u i l t b y t h e m i s s i o n a r y b e f o r e  I n d e p e n d e n c e i s n o m o r e a t t r a c t i n g  government  attention.  The  school  is  now  in  a  sorry  state.  The  only  secondary  school  we  have  as  of  now  is  one  at  Saint  Charles  C a t h o l i c C h u r c h a t A p a O g b o z u  community ,  which  was  initiated  by  one  Reverend  Father .”

“W e  do  not  have  anybody  in  the  Benue  State  Government  cabinet  both  in  the  local,  s t a t e a n d i n f e d e r a l l e v e l s W e a r e a l l  confused  on  what  to  do  and  where  to  go  b e c a u s e w e d o n o t k n o w w h e n t h i s  indefinite  discrimination  will  come  to  an  end  because  even  to  the  extent  that  the  local  government  identification  letters  are  no  m o r e b e i n g g i v e n t o u s a n y l o n g e r a s  Nigerian  citizens.”

Chief  Nwali  also  said  that  during  rainy  season,  their  people  get  drowned  in  water  and  disclosed  that  none  of  the  streams,  r i v e r s a n d l a k e s h a s a n y b r i d g e a n d  lamented  that  during  the  last  flood  incident,  they  lost  almost  all  their  farm  lands  and  every  other  thing  they  had  laboured  for .

“The  political  oppression  which  we  have  been  subjected  to  is  very  serious.  Even  one  o f t h e b i g g e s t r i v e r s w e h a v e h a s n o t  a t t r a c t e d g o v e r n m e n t a t t e n t i o n , j u s t t o  build  a  bridge  across  it.  Last  year ,  more  than  20  people  died  while  trying  to  cross  the  river  for  their  normal  daily  business.  W e m a d e s o m a n y e ff o r t s t o v i s i t o u r  former  Governor ,  Gabriel  Suswan  and  our

Senator ,  David  Mark,  to  table  our  problem  before  them,  but  all  to  no  avail.”

An  octogenarian,  Pa  Nwankwo  Alo  said:  “Our  children  have  not  been  immunized  over  the  years,  let  alone  polio  eradication  programme.  Our  women  do  not  even  know  what  hospital  is  when  they  are  pregnant  because  there  are  no  hospitals  to  attend  and  yet  we  have  up  to  32  polling  units.  W e  have  even  called  for  more  polling  units  because  we  are  more  than  the  present  one  but  the  government  refused  even  as  the  national  confab  in  2014  came;  there  was  nobody  to  speak  for  us.”

On  the  September  23,  2016,  their  umbrella  o r g a n i z a t i o n , B e n u e I g b o D e v e l o p m e n t  Union  –  BIDU  issued  a  press  release:

WE  ARE  REAL INDIGENOUS  IGBO:

Unequivocally , Benue Igbo people are not  known  as  farm  settlers,  as  some  prominent  Igbo  men  are  going  about  broadcasting  to  the  public  that  we  are  only  settle  here  for  sake  of  farming.

Comprehensively ,  farming  is  our  pride  in  relation  to  our  kith  and  kin  in  Ebonyi  state,  namely  :. Ezza,  Izzi  Effium  and  Ezzamgbo  people.

These  people  mentioned  here  are  today  the  strength  of  Abakaliki  political  block  and  also  the  farming  strength  of  Ebonyi  people

For  more  than  hundred  years  ago  we  have  being in Benue state even, during the time  of  civil  war  Nigeria  government  used  all  her  machinery  against  us  in  Benue  here  which  later  turn  to  futile  and  disgrace  to  them  and  still  today  we  are  pronouncing  widely  in  popularity  more  than  expected.  Nigeria  government,  I  think  this  is  the  right  t i m e t o e m b r a c e j u s t i c e a n d s t o p t h e  political  ostracism  against  the  Benue  Igbo.  Although,  we  have  being  facing  a  lot  of  unexpected  harassment  but  we  are  firmly  assuring  you  people  that  no  amount  of  political  deprivation  or  subjugation  will  m a k e u s t o d e n y o u r i d e n t i t y a s I g b o  speaking  people  of  Benue  state  and  we  must  forever  remain  resolute  to  achieve  our  political  freedom…..  People  should  stop  misdirecting  the  public  with  messages  full  of  deceit  and  shenanigans  that  we  are  farm  settlers  in  Benue  state.  WE  ARE  REAL INDIGENOUS  IGBO  IN  BENUE

T h e  hunger  for  freedom  is  unquenchable  in  man.  A s i t i s i n m o d e r n  marriages,  so  it  was  in  Empires  where  cultures  w e r e b o t t l e d u p a n d  n a t i o n a l i s t s u s e d a s  fi r e w o o d t h a t c o o k e d  the  delicacy  of  tyranny  and  dictatorship.

The  age  of  Empires  have  gone.  E v e n t h o u g h w e h a v e s i m i l a r  s t r u c t u r e s t o d a y , t h e r e i s n o  s t a b i l i t y w h e r e t h e m o d u s  operandi  copied  the  old  pattern.  Europe  jettisoned  it  to  enable  her

form  a  united  European  Union.  Many  members  of  the  EU  were  former  satellite  states,  but  their

empire  to  lay  siege  on  cultures  and  c u r t a i l t h e i n d u s t r i a l t a l e n t s o f  indigenous  people.  W e  have  seen

e m e r g e n c e a s s o v e r e i g n s t a t e s  h e l p e d s u s t a i n e d p e a c e . T h e

The  emer gence  of  Nigeria  as  an  independent  country  q u i c k l y e x p o s e d t h e  dysfunctional  arrangement  and  clash  of  culture.  Like  a  marriage  of  incompatibles,  t h e b i c k e r i n g i s a  c o n t i n u o u s p r o c e s s .  A l r e a d y m o r e t h a n 7  m i l l i o n d i e d i n t h e w a r  b e t w e e n N i g e r i a a n d t h e  p e o p l e o f B i a f r a f r o m  1 9 6 7 7 0 .
