  • Deciduous tree, 30-35 ft (9-10 m) high, rounded, frequently lower branches maintained.  Bark whitish-striped, with small rusty orange spots.  Leaves simple, opposite, red when unfolding, finally 6-16 cm long, 3(5) lobed, lateral lobes short and spreading outward [occasionally lobes absent], base cordate, apex acuminate, prominently serrate from apex to base, dark green above and bright green and hairless (glabrous) below, usually with reddish veins; petiole often red, 3-5 cm long; fall color orange red.  Flowers greenish white, about 8 cm wide, on slender stalks 8-15 cm long, in drooping clusters 7-10 cm long.  Fruit wings spreading at a wide angle or nearly horizontal, 1.5-2 cm long.
  • Best in cool, part shade.  
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 5    Native to mountainous regions of Japan, mainly Honshu and Shikoku Islands.
  • capillipes: from the Latin capillus, hair, and pes, foot, slender-footed, apparently a reference to the delicate flower stalks (Jacobson, 1996).
