  • Broadleaf deciduous tree or shrub, 15-25(40) ft [4.5-7.6(12) m] tall in the landscape, similar to A. arborea.  Twigs glabrous (without hairs), at first reddish brown but becoming dull gray the second season.  Leaves simple, alternate, ovoid to elliptic, 3-8 cm long, tapered to a sharp point, bronzy when unfolding (at or just before flowering), lack pubescence, 10 pairs of veins, margin has about 25 veins per side, veins stop short of teeth (Farrar, 1995).  Flowers small, white, petals 10-17 mm long, in drooping clusters.  Fruit purple-black, about 10 mm across, calyx reflexed, sweet, juicy.
