There are about 5 or 6 deciduous or semi evergreen trees within the mahogany family in this genus. They naturally occur in woodland from Eastern China and the Himalayas to Eastern Australia. They are grown for their alternate, pinnate leaves with oval to lance shaped leaflets and small, cup shaped, fragrant, greenish white or white flowers, which are borne in large, terminal and axillary panicles. T. sinensis is the most common species in cultivation. It grows best in areas with hot summer, where it is a useful shade or street tree.

Grow in fertile, well drained soil in full sun with shelter from winds. Preforms best in a moist climate.

Prone to tip moth larvae, and mites.

T. sinensis – Cedrela sinensis – Chinese Toon – This single trunk tree or multi stem clump, is a broadly columnar, often suckering, deciduous tree from East and South China and Southeast Asia and grows 30-50′ feet tall and 30′ feet wide. The bark peels and is brown. It produces aromatic leaves, to 24″ long, and have up to 226 oval to lance , papery leaflets, bronze-red to pink when young, turning yellow in autumn. In mid summer, bears small fragrant, white or greenish white flowers in pendent, terminal panicles, to 12″ long.
