Among maples that do not belong to the Japanese group you can also find jewels that offer something a little more extraordinary than the common species. Aureum variety of Cappadocian maple is one example.
This mid-sized tree from Asia has interesting palmate leaves with 5 or 7 lobes with conspicuous tips. They are bright green as they emerge, changing to mid green in summer and turning back to golden yellow, sometimes with red shades in autumn. The bark is smooth and greenish gray when young, shallowly grooved in maturity.It grows medium fast or fast into a compact tree with rounded, mushroom-head crown. It gets almost as wide as tall. It takes any sort of pruning at the end of winter and almost any soil. Fully hardy to -29°C (USDA zone 5).
