Acer 'PACIFIC SUNSET'

Acer 'PACIFIC SUNSET'

'PACIFIC SUNSET' Maple

synonym Acer truncatum x platanoides 'Warrenred'

Description

Acer ‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ (‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ Maple, synonym: Acer truncatum x platanoides ‘Warrenred’) was discovered as a seedling by coincidence by tree breeder Keith S. Warren and was introduced by J. Frank Schmidt & Son Nursery in Oregon in 1989. The ‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ cultivar is a cross between Acer truncatum and Acer platanoides. There are many similarities with the ‘NORWEGIAN SUNSET’ selection, but ‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ stays a bit smaller, with heights up to 9 metres with a somewhat more open, round crown.

In April, Acer ‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ blooms striking yellow-green flower racemes. The flowers are popular among bees and butterflies. After blooming, the tree bears striking, winged brown-green fruit. The glossy, oval maple leaves are thick and leathery, which means that water does not evaporate as quickly, and the tree is not affected much by heat and sunbeams. The foliage buds a beautiful orange, then turns green in the summer and in autumn - earlier than Acer ‘NORWEGIAN SUNSET’ - the ‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ selection’s leaves surprise passers-by with a lovely yellow-orange to orange-red colour gradient. Acer ‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ has grey-brown, slightly furrowed bark.

As a standard tree in central reservations, the ‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ cultivar is a great street, avenue and park tree. But the selection also thrives on squares and along roads - in semi-paved areas or with proper improvement of the habitat underground. Acer ‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ can handle wind, heat, drought and air pollution. With 5A winterhardiness, that makes the tree an excellent candidate for climate planting. Acer ‘PACIFIC SUNSET’ has few soil requirements, but for the best possible growth and bloom, it prefers a sunny environment.
