Amelanchier laevis

Amelanchier laevis

Allegheny serviceberry

Description

The Amelanchier laevis (Allegheny serviceberry) is native to the eastern part of North America. The species is feral in the sandy soils of the Netherlands and Belgium. It is a beautiful multi-stem or standard tree, which grows up to 9 metres high and 6 metres wide when cultivated. The Allegheny serviceberry grows narrow and upright when it is young, and later on it forms a vase-shaped crown.

In late April and early May, the tree is adorned with many racemes of light fragrant, white flowers. In late July, the Allegheny serviceberry is filled with frosty blue-violet berries that taste sweet. The leaves bud dark bronze-red and have a bright green colour with a light-green underside in the summer. Its autumn colours range from yellow to a warm orange-red.

Though the species tolerates partial shade, direct sunlight is preferred. Then the Amelanchier laevis bears the best fruit and has the best autumn colours. The species requires slightly acidic, moist and nutrient-rich soil and tolerates wind and air pollution well.
