Gleditsia triacanthos 'Speczam'

Speczam Honey locust

synonym Gleditsia triacanthos 'Spectrum'

Description

Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Speczam’ (‘Speczam’ honey locust) is a selection of Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Sunburst’ and was patented by Lake County Nursery, Ohio, USA. This thornless cultivar has a more upright form than ‘Sunburst’, with a narrower growth habit. ‘Speczam’ can grow to be 10 metres tall, with a width of 6 to 7 metres. The crown is open and egg-shaped.

In June, this honey locust blossoms with small, discrete but highly fragranced racemes of flowers. The yellow, oval-shaped emerging leaves are unipinnate or bipinnate. Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Speczam’ keeps its yellow-green leaves and twigs throughout the whole summer. This is in contrast to ‘Sunburst’, which turns greener after the burst of yellow in the spring. In the autumn, the leaves of the ‘Speczam’ turn a beautiful golden yellow. The bark is slightly grooved and is grey in colour. The cultivar does not bear fruit.

Drought, air pollution, road salt and short wet periods are all tolerated well by Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Speczam’. The selection is versatile and can be used in streets, avenues, on squares, at car parks and in parks. But the honey locust ‘Speczam’ also thrives well on central reservations, in large and small gardens and at cemeteries. It is a fantastic tree for bees and butterflies with a high nectar and pollen score. Plant this Gleditsia in dry, damp or wet soil, with a neutral to acidic pH value. A position in the sun is preferable.
