Dwarf Japanese Cedar | 'Globosa Nana' Cryptomeria
The landscape pictures in the listing are taken at our nursery and are 7 years old..... Pruned only once in 7 years!
Dwarf Japanese Cedar or 'Globosa Nana' is an evergreen shrub with soft, bluish-green needles that spiral around slender branchlets. It is a very compact variety of cedar, growing 3 – 4 feet both tall and wide. This evergreen conifer grows into a globe shape without any pruning or shaping; it is beautiful in all seasons and can shift in color, turning from yellow green in summer months to blue-green or rusty red in winter months.
It is a wonderful choice for a low-maintenance, sphere-shaped topiary. It has small, spherical, rosette-shaped cones growing less than an inch in size, which are a delightful addition to the plant. It also boasts showy, reddish exfoliating bark. This variety of cedar is small enough to be a container plant, or it can be planted as small hedge of shrubs, added as a welcoming entryway on either side of a front door or patio entrance, or used in any landscaping project.
The Dwarf Japanese Cedar 'Globosa Nana' is very easy to grow and care for but is a slow grower, only gaining about 3 – 4 inches per year. It does best in full sun or partial sun and is tolerant of most soil types. It is very hardy plant but should protected from harsh, drying winds. It grows in zones 5 – 9 and needs very little trimming or pruning. Trimming the dead branchlets within the interior of the plant helps keep it performing at its best, but overall, it does not need to be shaped or trimmed back to retain its flowing, spherical shape. It resists deer, pests, and diseases and is resilient against drought, making it a very hardy plant and a perfect choice for any garden.
