These are great large vigorous deciduous trees, broadly conical in habit when young. Ideal as an individual specimen tree, pruned hedging or grown as a bonsai. They do well in moist sites in full sun/semi-shade, but are quite tolerant of other soil types, sites and moisture. Alnus cordata in particular is better for drier sites. They are great pioneer trees and can help enrich poor soils through their association with nitrogen fixing symbiotic bacteria, called Frankia alni. They grow to around 20 - 30m high and 8 - 10m across, with short stalked rounded leaves (leaves are glossier and more heart shapped in A. cordata), producing seperate male and female flowers in the form of catkins. Grey-purple buds and masses of yellow conspicuous catkins occur on bare stems in winter, followed by rounded bright green leaves and small cone like fruits. Alnus cordata is particularly valued for its valuable red - orange wood that can be used for turning, carving, moulding, furniture, panelling and plywood Great for encouraging biodiversity when grown in its native range, with many associating fauna and flora!
