Magnolia officinalis var. biloba
Epithet: medicinal
A deciduous magnolia native to SE China: Hubei,Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian and Hunan.
Fast growing medium sized to large tree to 20m.
Flowers: creamy white, often irregular in shape, 15-20cm in diameter, 9-15 tepals with incurved margins and wrinkled surfaces.
Leaves: elliptic-obovate with deep notch at tip (bilobe),30-40 x 15-18cm, green and glabrous above, pressed pubescence on underside, papery texture, rippled margins.
This is more commonly seen than the species and was first described by E.H. Wilson in 1927.
