Small tree with densely branching, narrow pyramidal to ovoid crown, to about 6 m. Young twigs are bright green, mature bark is green-brown and smooth. The leaves are conspicuously glossy and dark green. The margins are very undulate, with 5 - 7 sharp prickles on each side. The flowers are small, fairly inconspicuous and female. They are followed by glossy, bright red, fleshy drupes (commonly called ‘berries’) about 8 mm across. Prefers a humic, moist but well-drained soil and tolerates either acidic or calcareous soil. Also suitable for use as a hedge.
