Medium-sized tree with a compact and narrow columnar crown. Height 10 to 12 m. Spread circa 4 m. Branching usually low. Perfect street and avenue tree. Trunk grey, young twigs are red-brown. The leaf stalk is red too. The leaf is shiny green and 10 cm. The underside is blue-green. Autumn colours in purple and orange hues. The red flowers appear before the leaves. The tree develops a sturdy main root with many fibrous rootlets. In limy and dry soil the growth is stunted and no colouring in autumn will take place. Also in heavy clay soil the growth is moderate. Poor tolerance to (sea) wind. Winter hardiness zone: 4 Acer rubrum 'Scanlon' forms a densely branched crown. 'Scanlon' is one of the best American selections of the red maple.
