Description

The Cork Oak is a slow growing evergreen tree which can live up to 250 years.

The bark of the Cork Oak has been harvested for a very long time. Before the first harvest the tree has to be 25 years old; after the harvest it will re-grow a new layer, which in turn can be harvested after 9-12 years. This process can then be repeated.

Flowers

Male flowers, catkins, are long, greenish yellow.
Female flowers, short-stalked, tiny, grouped together, 1 or 2, seldom 3.

Leaves

Ovate leaf is egg-shaped, wider at base, Elliptic oval leaf. Egg-shaped to oval, entire or serrated, smooth above, hairy beneath, 3-7 cm.

Fruits Seeds

Nut: Acorn, a hard shelled pod that contains the fruit and seed of the plant; it does not open to release seeds.
